How to Build an AR-15 Upper Receiver – Ejection Port Cover

AR-15 Ejection Port Cover Assembly - thearmsguide.com

Continuing on with our AR-15 upper receiver build from last week’s forward assist installation, I will be guiding you through how to install the ejection port cover. Installing the ejection port cover is one of those things that can prove to be easier said than done, but with my help, we will get it done in almost no time.

Items Needed

  • Ejection port cover
  • Ejection port cover rod
  • Ejection port cover spring
  • Small “C” clip
  • Needle nose pliers

To see the complete list of tools I refer to for this AR-15 upper build, refer to this post.

The 5 Step Process

Simply stated, the ejection port cover rod goes through the upper receiver, through the first half of the ejection port cover, through the spring, through the second half of the ejection port cover and finally through the upper receiver. However, there are some specific things to pay attention to in order to accomplish this successfully. If you would like to watch me do it, be sure to check the above video.

When I installed my ejection port cover, I secured my upper receiver in the upper receiver vise block so I could keep my hands free. Using an upper receiver vise block is optional, but you may find it quite helpful.

1. Use the needle nose pliers to securely hold the very small “C” clip to manipulate it into the slot on the ejection port cover rod.

2. Slide the rod through the first hole in the upper receiver, that is, the one closest to the barrel end. This is important because if you do not install it this way, the ejection port cover rod will not be secure and will fall out even after the barrel is installed.

3. As you are sliding the rod through, hold the ejection port cover in the “open” position and continue to slide the rod through the first half of the cover.

4. Here is the somewhat tricky part. Grab the spring. You will have to twist it to create spring tension. With it twisted, place the long leg into the groove in the ejection port cover and then try and push the rod through as you make sure the spring remains twisted. As you push the rod all the way through the spring, rest the small leg of the spring against the bottom portion of the ejection port hole on the upper receiver.

5. Make sure the cover is lined up with the second hole in the upper receiver and slide the rod through the rest of the ejection port cover and then through the second hole. Now, just make sure it opens and closes with spring tension.

Here is the final result. Notice the correct placement of the spring legs.

Congratulations, you just installed the ejection port cover on your AR-15 upper receiver. You may be wondering why the rod can still be removed. Once the barrel and rail are installed, it will not be able to slide out anymore. Be sure to check in next week for when I guide you through the barrel installation.
