Looking at the title, it might make you think of a time when you’ve had to make the best out of a bad situation.
We’ve all done it at some point to get the job done. For example, taking a strap off a less used piece of gear to replace a broken one on something used regularly, or using duct tape on a cracked buckle hoping it stays together.
Right now I want to talk about taking some of the best options available, and creating something great! By “making ends meet”, from parts offered by different companies.
I’m covering the:
• Blade-Tech “Tek-Lok”, and MOLLE-Lok Adapters
• True North Concepts MHA(Modular Holster Adapter)
• Shaw Concepts Sidekick V2 (Leg Strap)
Having seen each of these in use individually. I couldn’t help but think of how well they could work together.
What did I find out? Possibly my new favorite setup! Not only does each individual component attach and function well with the other, but they’re comfortable and look good too!
Blade-Tech parts:
I chose to try both the Tek-Lok and the MOLLE-Lok, as the means of attaching the setup to my Belt. Both functioned quite well, but I ultimately chose the Tek-Lok over the latter. Mostly do to the ease of adjustment, and it’s ability to be more stable if needing to run it on an inner belt alone. Squeezing the bottom of each side together, releases it from the locked position, allowing it to swing open. You can then easily adjust the position on your belt, or take it off entirely with no tools needed. However, using the MOLLE-Lok does allow for it to be mounted slightly lower on the belt. It’s also kept on the outside of the belt, compared to being clamped around it. Both could be things one might find preferred. Especially if keeping the inside hook and loop unobstructed is a priority, even though the two inches it blocks is minimal.
True North Concepts MHA:
This has been probably one of the most used mounting platforms on the market since it was announced in 2020. If you’re reading this there is a good chance you either have one, or know someone that does. It’s lightweight, rigid, and gives you options on what, or how you want to mount something.
The mount on its own, or with the Tek-Lok, sets your holster at a mid-ride level off of your belt line. So as I mentioned above, with the MOLLE-Lok. If you are looking for something a bit lower, using those may be able to get you another 1”-1 1/2” of clearance. Whether you are looking to build a new setup, or just want an upgrade from a polymer holster mount. This is an option that should not be overlooked.
Shaw Concepts Sidekick V2:
I absolutely love this leg strap! I had the original which was great in its own right, but the fact that this one swivels makes a world of difference. It allows for your leg to freely move without putting any torque on the holster mount.
Movement from pretty much any position is made easier. When kneeling or sitting for example, you don’t end up with the holster being pushed back by the added tension that can come with leg straps that can’t maneuver. Letting your belt and holster stay in a more natural and relaxed position.
This version, like the original, also comes with MOLLE cut outs on the “wings” for mounting items on either side of the holster. I personally don’t put anything more than a tourniquet on there in order to keep it light. Plus, if I need to use my leg to push against or rest on something. I don’t end up with something hard digging into my upper thigh.
Final Thoughts:
After wearing this setup for over 2 weeks, I have worn it on duty, I have worn it hiking, and I have worn it at the range.
It has definitely changed my mind on what I consider acceptable performance. At least when it comes to how I want my gear to sit and feel.
Each item is made from quality materials, but when coming from highly reputable manufacturers that should be expected. Each item is priced fairly in my opinion. I’d be willing to say that not one of them are going to make you hide your wallet after the sight of the price tag. With the True North Concepts MHA being the most expensive, I was able to get all of it for around $180.
The Blade-Tech items were on sale when purchased, but full price is still reasonable.

At the end of the day this worked out great for me, maybe it could work for you too!
Everyone has their preferences, and you might be dead set on running what you’ve got now, but each one of these items is worth a try on its own.
