I was contacted by the owner of Krypteia Knives requesting us to test and evaluate one of his knives. The knife we chose to review is the Deimos Tactical Grind. Deimos is the incarnation of the horror of war (son of Aris and brother of Phovos). The knives are built for the most demanding environments in the field and will serve you well.
The Deimos, in my opinion, is the perfect size for a fixed blade EDC knife. When I look for an EDC fixed blade I look for a knife that is 7” overall with at least a 3” blade. Those measurements give you a large enough handle for a full hand grip and enough blade to handle any utility task. The blade can also be easily pushed into a defensive role if you find yourself in that situation.
Let’s take a closer look at the knife itself.
Handle – The handle material is formed from G10. The handle does have a ‘beefy feel’ to it and fills out the hand very well when gripping the knife. The design of the handle will allow you to use the knife for prolonged periods of time without your hand getting fatigued. The knife is full-tang and protrudes ever so slightly at the pommel. This feature would allow you to utilize the handle as a glass breaker, but still allow you to put your thumb over it in a reverse grip without any discomfort. This is the first time I’ve seen a knife that has a glass breaker built into it that does not affect your ability to retain the knife in a reverse grip or assisted stabbing motion (Well done, Krypteia).
Sculpted G10 Scales
Blade – The blade steel is O1 Tool Steel. O1 Tool Steel is a popular steel used on many Bushcrafting knives due to its edge retention properties and ease of honing and sharpening in the field. Yes, it will rust, but if you maintain the knife and keep a protective layer of oil on the blade, you will not have to worry about rusting. The blade profile is a hybrid of Drop Point, Tanto and Recurve.
Sheath – The sheath is a very basic Kydex sheath. The sheath has great retention of the knife. There are eyelets on the sheath that allow you to carry the knife in a few different configurations. You could just loop some paracord through the two bottom eyelets and roll with a neck carry. The spacing of the eyelets along the side also matches up with the Blade-Tech Tek Lok belt clips if you wish to carry this on your belt. If you choose to carry IWB (Inside the Waistband), you then could attach Raven Concealment Tuckable Overhooks to the sheath. Although the sheath is very basic, you do have several options for how to carry the knife.
