Aimpoint or EOtech for the AR15

May 2, 2016 by Max Pranger Leave a Comment

Purchasing an Aimpoint or EOTech red dot sight for the AR15 can present some very daunting challenges.  Many of these choices will depend on how you will be using it and what type of situation’s will be presented to you.  Some may only use the rifle for basic range shooting and sport shooting.  Others may use their rifle for hunting or personal protection at home or out and about.

The U.S.’s elite military units commonly use the Aimpoint and EOTech red dot sights, just to name a few.  They have used the Aimpoint Comp M2 & M4 EOTech 553 Holographic Sight’s past and present.

As a Navy SEAL, I used the Aimpoint, ACOG TA01NSN and Colt 4 X 20. This was back in the mid to late 90’s though and they have most definitely made numerous improvements since then.  I have used EOTech in the past, but not while I was in the military. I used the EOTech sight’s in temperate conditions and I was not subjected to the problems that Law Enforcement and the Military have had with them.  You also have to understand the testing and requirements criteria that the Military and Law Enforcement put their equipment through.

Let’s talk about EOTech and the lawsuit that they settled for $25.6 million for Fraudulent disclosure. There were several reasons EOTech was brought to court.  The basis of the issues stemmed from how cold, heat and humidity affected the accuracy of the sights. When you get a shooting zero at temperature or moisture setting and deviate substantially they are claiming that there will be some drift.  In my mind this is unacceptable.  I don’t want my sights changing on their own.

In the end, I myself would probably lean more towards Aimpoint as they have had a long positive track record with the military and myself.  I would do your research on the sights that you are comparing.  Do not believe the man or woman behind the counter, because they are going to tell you exactly what you want to hear.  If you buy a sight online, make sure they have a quality warranty and return policy.

I have attached a no “B.S.” article about the EOTech lawsuit settlement that explains in further detail the problems of the EOTech holographic sight system.  The article was written by one of the Author’s with Rock River Arms.
