Wideners has been around since 1978, selling reloading equipment and shooting supplies. Known largely as a great source for powder and projectiles to reload with, Wideners also offers a wide variety of factory ammo. When you are looking for an accurate load for your rifle, you need to try different bullet weights and loads to see what performs best in your gun. Wideners makes this easy, there are a number of loads for every caliber.
I have several .308 rifles and they each have their own requirements. The 308 Winchester is one of the most popular large-caliber rifle cartridges in use today. The .308 Winchester and 7.62×51 cartridges are mostly interchangeable and deliver superb long-range accuracy for hunters and target shooters.
The 308 was developed by Winchester back in 1952 and continues to be one of the most popular hunting rounds on the market. If you are hunting or shooting a match the .308 has the accuracy, low price, high power, and long range you need.
Most commercial .308 ammunition fires a 150-165 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of nearly 3,000 feet per second. With soft point or polymer tipped bullets, the cartridge is capable of taking all but the biggest game with one well-placed shot. You’ll also find full metal jacket rounds for sale in bulk providing a less expensive alternative to feed your .308 ARs.
Winchester has been producing firearms and ammunition for over 150 years, starting in 1866. Â With iconic products such as the model 70, model 12 and model 1873, Winchester has earned a place in American history. They make great ammunition too.

Gold Medal Match from Federal Premium aims to please precision shooters who are trying to squeeze every bit of accuracy out of their game-taking and match-winning rifles. These .308 rounds use re-loadable brass casings with non-corrosive Boxer primers bordered by moisture-blocking protective sealant. The rounds are topped by 168 grain Sierra MatchKing boat-tail hollow points (BTHP), a projectile design commonly precision reloaders as well as military snipers who are trusted to take the most important shots in modern conflicts. BTHP rounds reduce drag in flight for longer range and repeatable accuracy and also tend to fragment in a target after entry (though these rounds are not ideal for hunting as they will remove or ruin lots of meat).
These rounds leave the muzzle at 2,650 feet-per-second while carrying 2619 foot-pounds of energy. Sierra projectiles are one of the most popular choices for manufacturers like Federal, Black Hills, and Norma to use in their safari hunting, competition-winning, and war-fighting recipes due to their unrivaled quality and consistency. Federal places stringent standards on the production of their Gold Medal Match line in order to maintain as much commonality between lot numbers as possible so that your DOPE book stays fairly normalized. 168 grain bullets are often used in any common twist rate of .308 barrel.

If you need ammo or reloading supplies, you can’t go wrong with Wideners. In my dealings with them they had the brands I needed, in stock and their prices are consistently among the best I can find.
About Widener’s
Deep Appalachian Roots
Widener’s has roots that run deep – in fact, the company goes way back into the late 1970’s. Of course, we weren’t selling much on the internet back then but it was in 1978 that Wideners.com founder Stan Widener first starting selling shooting supplies and reloading components. An avid hunter, it didn’t take much for the bug to swallow him whole and his passion for shooting sports quickly turned into a full-time career.
The Digital Age
Wideners.com got its start in 1996 when the company opened up shop on the world wide web. Sure, the first site wasn’t much to look at compared to today’s site but we were pretty excited to have the chance to serve shooters all over the country with primers, powders and more. It’s clear that a lot has changed in terms of technology but we still pride ourselves on always making time to treat our customers right. That includes making time to help new shooters and reloaders learn about the sport we love through tools like this handy Guide to Smokeless Gun Powder.
Wideners.com Today
Still based in Appalachia, Wideners.com continues to pride itself on friendly customer service, competitive prices and most of our employees are, themselves, shooters and reloaders. That means when you call in with a question about ammmunition or reloading components, odds are good we have somebody that’s willing to lend a hand and has actually used the product themselves. Pair that knowledge with fast shipping and a flawless inventory tracking system that ensures you don’t get stuck waiting on a backorder and you’ll be hooked!
While most of us here would rather spend our time outside at the range or in the woods than inside at the computer, we think the web can do a lot to bring the shooting community together. Check out our Friends of Widener’s page to learn more.
