Timney 10/22 Trigger: First Impression

Timney 10/22 Trigger: First Impression

The Ruger 10/22 rifle is 50-year-old classic rifle everyone should own. Because of its simple design, reliability, and low price, it is the first semi-auto .22 rifle of choice for shooters across the fruited plains. Its modular design and abundant aftermarket lets you build the exact gun you want. Among the best of these additions is the Timney replacement trigger.

The Ruger® 10/22 is a clever design with a slick rotary magazine which lives inside the stock. The most popular .22 rifle in the world, it the basis for the famous “Liberty Training Rifle.” Reliable and affordable, there is nothing else even close. The bad news? Out of the box, it has poor sights, a terrible magazine release, and a sloppy five-pound trigger. The good news? Timney has fixed two of these problems with a single product.

As a kid, I learned some conventional wisdom on firearms upgrades. You should buy the highest quality you can afford, and improvements should go in this order until you run out of money: trigger, sights, barrel, and stock. A new trigger assembly makes a big difference in accuracy. This is not because of the effect on the rifle, but its effect on the shooter. Trigger jerk and anticipation are the biggest challenges in shooting. A clean, light trigger can help.

The trigger on the 10/22 is very easy to change. Because of the tight tolerances, mine took the smallest fitting using a 3/16 drill bit, but went on very smoothly. The Timney trigger is a pre-assembled housing designed for close fit and squareness. All you need is replace the original trigger guard assembly and enjoy that famous Timney engineering.

The Timney trigger has an improved sear and hammer interface which improves geometry. This produces a clean, consistent trigger break at 2 3/4 pounds. The lever magazine release under the trigger guard and the automatic bolt release allow you to change magazines with your shooting hand.

The one-piece action is made of CNC-machined 6061-T6 aircraft-grade billet aluminum. The trigger, sear, and hammer are made of heat-treated steel for strength.

All Timney complete action replacements are made in the U.S., hand-assembled, calibrated, and tested. The trigger is set at 2 3/4 pounds from the factory, with no creep.

The trigger unit is available in black and silver, with six color options for the trigger-shoe colors.
