The Vertx EDC Commuter is an absolutely massive bag, but it doesn’t appear that way from the outside. Sure it’s on the larger side of sling bags, but it’s still smaller than a backpack. I say it’s massive because of the amount of gear I can store in this thing. Not only that but because of the massive potential of the bag. The Vertx EDC Commuter Bag is divided into four different pouches, and each offers a ton of options for customization and potential load outs.
Packing For Success
So as an EDC bag you have room for just about any and everything. You can load it up for both peace and war. As an EDC pack, I’ve loaded up with some normal everyday stuff on trips to the springs or beach. Computer, water bottle, some snacks, a couple spare mags, a camera, flashlight, spare cell phone battery, you know the normal stuff. In an EDC role, it’s pretty spectacular, especially if you are doing an event that’s pocket challenged like swimming. Its size, room, and organizational ability make it a good minimalist option for whatever.
Even when loaded down with a days worth of summer fun supplies its comfortable due to the wide strap and the padded backing. I could go on and on about Summer activities, but that’s not why we come to the Loadout Room is it?
Packing For War with the Commuter
The goal of the Vertx Commuter is to be an edc bag for the more cultured individual. The type of person who carries a gun daily may need a trauma kit and prefers to be prepared than surprised. The Commuter makes this possible due to its overall design. We covered it a bit in our first look, so check it out if you want the run down on the specs.
I stacked the bag in a few different tactical Loadouts. The AR variant is what I imagine a purposefully armed individual would us. In this case, it’s basically a go bag for police officers and a bug out bag for the everyday Joe. To make the AR variant I combined the Blue Force Gear Horizontal 3 mag pouch and the Vertx MAPS Quad. MAPS stands for MOLLE Adapter Panel System. It’s a velcro panel that attaches to the internal Velcro of the Vertx pack. It allows you to mount MOLLE any and everywhere.
This offered me 90 rounds of 5.56 plus what was already in my gun. The design of the pack allows it to be gripped and ripped to ride in front of the body. The well thought out compartments allows you to convert the pack from a pack to an improvised chest rig. The combination of the Mount and the BFG horizontal pouches make a very efficient system for combat purposes.
For you and me
My days of carrying a gun and being paid for it are long gone. Now I tend to be peaceful as possible, but I still like to make sure I can revert to the old me when necessary. Decking the bag out for me was easy. The biggest and most notable piece of gear I’m storing in the Commuter is my Kel Tec Sub 2k. The Sub 2k is a folding 9mm rifle that reverts to 16 inches and some change when folded.
It fits perfectly in the mag with a 17 round Magpul mag in place. In the rest of the bag, I’m packing two ETS 31 round magazines and 1 additional Magpul 17 round magazine. I’m storing these in the Blue Force Gear Dapper pouch. Inside the bag is also my 1Tac flashlight, my Sunjack Mini, a Kershaw Link, and 1 spare mag for my concealed carry piece.
In the very back of the Vertx Commuter, behind the Kel tec, I keep the Angel Armor panel inserted here. When I pull the bag in front of me the panel protects my valuable internals like my lungs and heart.
The last piece of gear I keep in the Vertx Commuter is the RE Factor Tactical Delta Medkit, fully loaded and ready to treat my booboos.
The orbital strap design makes it very easy, and very simple to pull the gun across the body and the large zippers make it easy to access the insides of the bag. Reloads were easy, especially once I learned the right way to stagger the magazines for easy access.
Looks
It’s the insides that count right? Sure, but the Commuter still needs to look good if I’m going to be carrying around people. The Vertx Commuter looks professional and high quality. The logos are subdued and hard to notice. There is nothing overtly tactical about the bag on the outside. It disguises itself well as a kick ass sling bag.
