I have in the past used several varieties of Wild Hedgehog Tactical Med Kits, and each one has a purpose and a plan attached to them. In my new full-time position I can now be deployed to forward locations during times of federally declared disasters which means lots of time in small spaces like Cessna 206’s and 208’s. That being said it was time for me to look at a dedicated work medical pack that I can keep under my desk as part of my deployment gear so I could just grab it and get on a plane to unknown places.
Initial Impressions
The Get Home Alive LITE kit comes in a Tactical Tailor Model 1 H accessory pouch, which is made in the United States by a Veteran operated company. This scored high marks with us across the board, since we already are well versed with the history and people at Tactical Tailor. On the front of the pouch is a modest sized patch of hook and loop backing that allows a user to attach morale patches or more importantly medical identification patches like shown in the featured image above.
The pouch doesn’t feature any dividers which isn’t a big deal since it allows users the flexibility to place other items in the pouch or adjust the positioning of the contents. The zippers on the pouch open freely as expected and allow users easy access to the supplies during time of need.
Finally we get to the meat and potatoes of the medical kit, the supplies it contains. The folks at Wild Hedgehog have included more gear than the pocket every day carry medical kit they produce but less than a full multi person trauma kit. One of the most versatile things in the medical kit is the SWAT-T Tourniquet, a bandage that can be used as a tourniquet or with some gauze can be used as a compression bandage. Being able to use one item for two different uses is a nice touch.
The most commonly used items in the kits will most likely be the bandaids, tape and other things used to treat small cuts or abrasions. These items are kept separately in a resealable heavy duty pouch so users only have to remove the smaller pouch instead of dumping all the contents of the kit to find a single band-aid or packet of burn cream. It’s little things like this that add to the user friendliness of the Get Home Alive LITE kit. The company thought of the end user and the majority of the ways this kit will be used during their research and development. This kit isn’t designed to be used for large groups of people, ideally its suited for one or two people.
Wild Hedgehog was thinking of modularity and portability when they laid this kit out, and to go one step further they provided two MALICE Clips with each kit they ship. The MALICE strips allow users to attach the first aid kit to any pack or section of MOLLE/PALS style webbing. What this means is the you can quickly detach your first aid kit and attach it to any number of bags or packs as you need to. You aren’t tied down to using the same pack or set up over and over again.
Overall Evaluation
Overall the Wild Hedgehog Get Home Alive LITE Medical Kit is an amazing kit and just about the right size for most users. If you are routinely out hiking or biking on trails, this kit would be perfect. It’s also right sized for any desk drawer in an office or school setting, allowing the user to respond to many everyday type of medical events. When you take the contents that were laid out with common sense applied, to an American Made pouch and toss in medical shears you have a real winner. The cherry on top of this whole deal is the discount that the company provides to Military and First Responders. If you are looking for medical kits for your car, house, office or just everyday life and don’t want to go through the hassle of trying to find out what is needed and what isn’t, just check Wild Hedgehog Tactical. Chances are if they don’t have exactly what you need they can build it and send it to you.
