I couldn’t tell you what content GQ features in their magazine, let alone what their abbreviated name stands for. Being that they aren’t my cup of tea, I was surprised to see them even come up on my newsfeed, but perhaps more intriguing was the short documentary they had just posted. Beneath the Ink features tattoo artist Billy White who hails out of Zanesville, Ohio. White owns and works out of the Red Rose Tattoo shop. His tattoo work is primarily traditional, or old school, but it’s more than his bold lines and vibrant colors that people starting to know him for.

White has chosen to combat the racism around him through his craft. He offers free coverups out of his studio for clients who wish to leave their past hatred behind them, and he plans on doing so forever. People come to White with inked swastikas, Ku Klux Klan tattoos, and other hate symbols, but leave with new inspired images of themselves. Echoing White’s sentiment, tattoos are powerful indeed.
