I’ve been putting the latest Kite APC 50 Image-Stabilized Binoculars through their paces, specifically the 18×50 model. This new addition to Kite Optics’ IS lineup has left me thoroughly impressed. The image stabilization is top-notch, and the new features and improved optics provide an even better viewing experience.
Kite has poured over a decade of research into their IS system, making it truly industry-leading technology. They have every reason to be proud.
So, what sets their system apart? The results I’ve seen are nothing short of impressive. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:
Until recently, image-stabilized binoculars relied on either lens shift mechanisms or Porro prism correction. Both use gyroscopes and electromotors, resulting in bulky, heavy binoculars with limited battery life and often lacking comprehensive waterproofing.
There’s also Mechanical Image Stabilization, which works instantly at the touch of a button without battery power. However, it’s large, heavy, and can’t distinguish between shake and panning, leading to an unstable image when panning so it isn’t used much.
Kite’s Roof Prism Stabilization
Kite APC binoculars use roof prisms for stabilization, allowing for a more compact design. This system employs smaller, faster-reacting, accurate stabilization with a large correction angle. Roof prisms don’t allow for stabilization with gyroscopes, which have a delay. Instead, Kite uses a unique gimbal suspension system with an array of accelerometers continuously monitoring every component. Intelligent software dynamically adjusts each component, achieving perfect equilibrium and coordination.
2nd Gen. Kite Dynamic Gimbal System (KDGS-2)
The core of all Kite Optics Image-Stabilized Binoculars is their Dynamic Gimbal System (KDGS). The KDGS-1 system provides a 3-degree correction angle and actively controls the prism through sophisticated software. The new Kite APC 50 Binoculars feature the second-generation KDGS-2, enhancing image stabilization and increasing the stable viewing experience.
The result? With the new Kite APC binoculars, the steady view provides a deeper feeling of immersion. It’s hard to describe, but the sensation of looking through binoculars almost vanishes, making you feel part of the scene before you.
KT 3.0 Software
Kite has also improved the software controlling the IS system. The Kite KPC 42 binoculars use second-generation KT2.0 software, while the latest APC 50 binoculars use the updated KT 3.0 Software. This is a significant leap forward, effectively making the sensation of looking through binoculars disappear.
Improved Optics
The higher the magnification, the more noticeable color fringing becomes. The new APC 50 features a fully Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass system that provides improved correction of chromatic aberrations. The quality glass and KITE MHR Advance+ coatings help achieve an 86% light transmission level, impressive even for optical-only binoculars. Combined with the large 50mm lenses, they perform well even in low-light conditions.
Environmental Protection
The KITE APC 50 binoculars are fully sealed and protected from the environment, unlike some other IS binoculars. For example, the third-generation Canon III Image Stabilized Binoculars lack complete weatherproofing and cannot be filled with nitrogen to prevent fogging. In contrast, KITE APC 50 binoculars have excellent weatherproofing:
IPX 7 waterproof rating: Submersion up to 1 meter in water.
Sealed electronics: Ensures durability in challenging environments.
Nitrogen gas filling: Prevents internal optics from fogging.
Conclusion
Until now, the downsides of image-stabilized binoculars often outweighed their advantages:
High price for the level of optics
Large and heavy
Short battery life
Poor weather protection
Sub-standard view quality or brightness
Narrow view due to high magnification
The KITE APC 50 binoculars address all these issues, making them a go-to choice for birdwatching, stargazing, traveling, on the range or exploring nature on a long walk. Available in USB-C rechargeable LI-ion and AA versions, Silicon Jackets, a smart phone adapter, shoulder strap, and more accessories, the APC-50 packs a big punch for the price.
