Original Candle Lantern | Lighting the Night

Original Candle Lantern | Lighting the Night

As I write this Winter is barely in the history books and Spring is charging in full-steam.  Camping season has begun and it’s time to gear up!  UCO (Utility, Comfort, Originality) has been creating innovative camping and survival gear near Seattle, WA since 1971.

Lately I’ve been taking a look at UCO’s Original Candle Lantern (OCL).  An ingenious little device, the OCL is much more than just a light.  Before I get ahead of myself, let’s take a look at the Lantern and what it offers.

Original Candle Lantern | Lighting the Night

A spring-powered tube pushes an approximately 3.5″ candle up into the glass chimney which collapses when not in use.  A metal plate up top diffuses heat for the safety of items directly above the lantern.  A glass viewing port on the side lets you keep track of how much burn time is remaining.  UCO offers 9 and 12 hour candles, as well as citronella to keep mosquitoes away.  The base plate unscrews and opens up in seconds, allowing you to change out candles quickly and easily.  Why do I say this candle lantern is more than just a light?  The full benefits of  the Original Candle Lantern below.

  • Small size at 4.25″ (when collapsed).
  • Lightweight aluminum construction at 6.4 oz (brass available at 8.8 oz), weight is with candle included.
  • Provides soft light which disrupts melatonin production in the body considerably less than electric “blue” lights.
  • Gives off warmth in the tent while reducing condensation.
  • More economical than burning through batteries with an E-lantern.
  • Has both a carrying handle and a hanging hook.
  • Insect repellent (with citronella candles).

I’m impressed with how sturdy is little unit feels, despite its light weight.  It’s hard to argue with the simplicity and reliability of a candle as well as the comfortable hue of light they cast off.  UCO sells the Original Candle Lantern for $19.99-$32.99 depending on aluminum versus brass construction and offers anodized colors as well.  Gear up now, late spring and summer are just around the corner so it’s time to get your camping supplies stocked up!
