Movie Review – 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

Movie Review – 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

13 HOURS is based on the true story that transpired in Benghazi on 9/11 2012, where 4 Americans paid the ultimate price; Ty “Rone” Woods, Glen “Bub” Doherty, Ambassador Chris Stevens, and Sean Smith.

At first glance you may not think that Michael Bay, the blockbuster director of epic popcorn action films, would be the ideal director for a story such as this; however, there are 2 reasons why he was a great fit to helm this move.

1.       FACT: Michael Bay loves and respects the troops. AWN producers have seen this first-hand from our work as film consultants. Popular culture portrays Bay as a self-absorbed ego maniac. Regardless of whether that’s true or not, no other A-list director that we know of has demonstrated respect for the troops when no one else is watching, as Bay has. He has interacted with dozens, if not hundreds of active duty and former troops in recent years and the stories from warfighters who’ve worked with him are pretty amazing to hear (we actually have a few ourselves).

2.       Michael Bay understands his audience. If you’re in the camp of those who see him as a one-dimensional filmmaker masking his lack of storytelling skills behind superfluous explosions, vfx, camera movement and quick edits, we would argue that you fail to see the big picture. We’d like to think that Bay knew this film would be closely watched by the warfighter community and he delivered a piece that wouldn’t disappoint.

Now that’s out of the way, let’s dive into the film itself.
