Legendary tracker returns to teach combat hunter instructors

Combat Hunter instructors attended a week-long tracking course from industry legend David Scott-Donelan and his team with The Scott-Donelan Tracking School, aboard Camp Geiger and Camp Lejeune Military Reservation, Aug. 25 through 29.

The course helped cement various tracking skills and techniques to further the ability of the instructors to teach Marines skills needed to track quarry.

“This week we have been working on instructor development for tracking with David Scott-Donelan and his tracking school,” said Sgt. Clint Strohman from Swansboro North Carolina, a combat instructor at Combat Hunter, Advanced Infantry Training Battalion –East. “He travels around the world and currently has the contract with the Marine Corps to train the instructors and better their knowledge.”

The course was comprised of classroom discussion and lectures as well as in the field tracking exercises.

“We have been building our skills and learning new skills along the way including learning new ways to instruct tracking,” said Strohman.

Training programs like Combat Hunter exist to train Marines in profiling and tracking skills to further effectiveness on the battlefield.

“I have a lot of names written on my arm that if they would’ve been able to receive this training they would still be alive today,” said Gus Mingus from Charlotte, North Carolina, a profiling subject matter expert with General Dynamics and instructor with Combat Hunter.”

Gaining further knowledge helps the instructors of Combat Hunter provide its students with more in depth and accurate knowledge.
