Kershaw DuoJet | Form and function

July 12, 2018 by Jens "Rex Nanorum" Hammer Leave a Comment

DuoJet

Kershaw is at it again.  The Tualatin, Oregon based manufacturer has released another batch of new knife models: I was lucky enough to get my hands on one to T&E, the DuoJet.

The Kershaw DuoJet has a 3.25″ long 8Cr13MoV stainless steel blade, that’s titanium carbo-nitride coated.  The 4.5″ handle has matching gray titanium carbo-nitrided steel contrasting with black carbon fiber.  The blade is opened with either the thumb stud or the flipper along the spine.  Once opened, it’s kept in place by the liner lock.  The whole package is designed to be deep carried, as the single-position pocket clip lets the knife hang low, in tip-up configuration.

DuoJet

As usual, the SpeedSafe opening method is silky smooth and balanced nicely regarding assisted-opening spring tension.  Kershaw always has their liner locks machined to perfection and the DuoJet is no exception.  Some of my most expensive and well-reputed knives have locks that aren’t tapered fast enough, allowing the bottom of the blade to over-engage, making the unlocking process way more of a pain than necessary.  The DuoJet is quite well-balanced and well-built in all regards.

Each blade I’ve used that is constructed with 8Cr13MoV steel is a performer.  It has the capability to take a really good edge, holds that edge well, and isn’t tricky to resharpen.  The DuoJet is right in line with what I’ve come to expect from this steel, as it came very sharp from the factory, has held up well to the use and abuse I’ve given it, yet gets back in shape with just a few minutes and a diamond stone.

DuoJet

What it shakes down to is quality offset by price.  Kershaw has really been a bull-in-the-ring regarding sub-$100 EDC knives.  They have the features and the formula to keep innovating new design elements while building upon an extremely proven and successful platform.  The Duojet comes in only at $44.99 but has much more value than that.  Check it out!
