Laser Ammo – I-M.T.T.S. – First Look and Unboxing

laser ammo

Dry fire is a big part of my training regimen and one I always suggest to new shooters. I wasn’t the biggest practitioner until 2012 when the great ammo shortage arrived. Because finding ammo was nearly impossible my time between trips to the range lengthened and when I could shoot I saw a big drop in skill levels. I began dry firing to try and preserve my skills. I didn’t just preserve but improved my skills. The Laser Ammo i-M.T.T.S. system is an electronic target system that takes dry firing to a new level.

Laser Ammo Interactive Targets

i-M.T.T.S. stands for Interactive Multi-target Training System. This target system is designed to be used with the Laser Ammo SureStrike laser training cartridge. The cartridge is adaptable for a wide variety of different firearms. The  i-M.T.T.S. is a target system that can interact with up to 5 targets in 5 different modes. Each mode can be completed with 1 to 5 targets.

While most dry fire training is about as entertaining as watching paint dry the Laser Ammo systems tend to make it more entertaining and even exciting. I haven’t had much time with the i-M.T.T.S.  but from what I’ve seen I like. The five modes are interesting. From the Laser Ammo website.

Mode 1: Stand Alone Mode Shoot, hear and visually see shots on each target

Mode 2: Steel Plate Shooting Shoot all targets as fast as you can!

Mode 3: Chase the Ball Perfect your tactical training, work on transitional drills around the room. Identify your threat target and shoot the bright green LED that moves between the targets.

Mode 4: Shoot/Don’t Shoot Shoot ONLY the moving green target that lights for 2 sec, or get “punished” when hitting the red one!

Mode 5: Double Speed Shoot/Don’t Shoot Shoot/Don’t Shoot on steroids! The 5th program runs at double speed for more proficient and faster shooters.

In the Box

The kits come in options of 1,3, and 5 target systems. The kit I received from Laser Ammo is the 3 target model. The electronic part of the target is the base. The base is where the magic happens. Users can swap the actual target you’ll be shooting. The targets are 3 inch round targets, 5 inch round targets, an IPSC target, and a B 27 target. When these targets are inserted into the base of the system they are what you’ll actually shoot. The base reads the shots and coordinates efforts between targets.

Trigger Time

I’ve gotten some trigger using both my CZ P09 and my Magnum Research MR9. DA/SA handguns are a lot easier to use with the Surestrike laser cartridge. I’ve used the First, Third and Fourth modes. The fourth is by far my favorite. The faster you start shooting the faster the targets change. Once you think you got the hang of it, you’d pull the trigger on a red target and it’s game over.

Fun or Training?

The biggest question is this a training tool or a fun interactive target system? Can it be both? This is what I’m hoping to find out over the next couple of weeks. My gun of choice will be the MR9 and CZ P09. Look for the full review coming soon. I plan to try each and every mode and determine what skills can be learned for them system. Stay tuned for the full review of the Laser Ammo i-M.T.T.S..
