5.11 Tactical Double Duty Pen: Premium writing implement and a last ditch defensive tool

November 18, 2017 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

5.11 Tactical Double Duty Pen | Review

Have you ever sat across the table from a loan officer or lawyer and quietly felt like jabbing your pen into their throat? Of course not, no one should think like that. Ok, have you ever been without your EDC pistol or blade and thought, if only I had something unobtrusive that I could stick in someones neck? Well, 5.11 has you covered with a SHTF double duty pen. The 5.11 Tactical Double Duty Pen is both a solid writing utensil that can quickly convert into a lethal puncturing device.

Machined from aerospace aluminum, the 5.11 Tactical Double Duty Pen measures 5.5″. With a slightly flared mid section and diamond knurling, this pen is a good comfortable fit as a writing utensil. Including a Fisher Space Pen® PR4 Medium Point Black ink cartridge, this pen is also a smooth operator. A flat base covered in a textured rubber pad allow a solid purchase with your thumb while using the pen for it’s more lethal utility. Matte black is the color of choice for not attracting unwanted attention. Finally, a sturdy steel pocket clip is attached for easy carry. However, I’d be really careful putting this pen in a front pocket due to the possibility of puncturing your leg or worse while bending over.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around where this tool fits into my EDC. At first, I was thinking it would be the perfect item to throw in my backpack while traveling by air because it’s just a pen, right? With the growing list of items dis-allowed on a plane, it would be nice to have a small tool that could bail you out of a confrontation or a jamb. Unfortunately, a little research on the world-wide web indicates that TSA is definitely onto these devices and will turn your day and travel plans to shit in a hurry. So you can add this pen to the no-go list which leaves me wondering where this Tactical Pen could come into play. Until I figure this one out, I’ll carry it on the outside of my Vanquest Mobius 2.0 vPacker in hopes of answering this question someday.
