Magpul SGA Stock and MOE Forend for the Remington 870

February 25, 2018 by Mark Miller 24 Comments

MAGPUL makes the ultimate stock and fore end for the Remington 870.  Spoiler alert: Let me start this by saying I am a huge fan of MAGPUL and the 870, so I am not objective.  The box came in from Brownell’s and I was at the range that afternoon.  I have about 1000 rounds of slug and buck through it now.  If you don’t have an 870, buy one now.  Police return guns are probabily your best value.

The shotgun is what I keep by the bed.  If I hear breaking glass at 3am, I grab a Remington 870 with a flash light and a big Trijicon tritium bead.  I keep 6 rounds of 00 buck in the magazine, empty chamber and 6 slugs in the Mesa Tactical Shell Holder.  Do I need all that ammo?   The FBI statistics for police shootings show the average number of shotgun rounds fired in an engagement is one.  What if there are 12 of them?

MAGPUL has taken a great gun and given me a custom ergonomic fit and a light mount for about $150.

The MOE Fore end is a drop-in replacement for the standard Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun, featuring extended length and front and rear hand stops for improved manipulation.

I like the way it feels.  I ride the hand stop in the back and it is a great index.  It shoots fast and has great ergonomics.  The flash light is out-of-the-way but I can reach the controls.

It comes with a polymer castle nut wrench and clear instructions so installation is a breeze if you can field strip an 870.  It is fully compatible with MAGPUL MOE rails, mounts, and accessories.  Now you can add lights mounts and shell holders to the proven Remington 870 platform for sporting use, home defense or duty.  They make them in Black, Flat Dark Earth, and Orange.

The SGA Stock is a user-configurable butt stock designed to improve ergonomics and add adjustability to the Remington 870 shotgun. The pistol grip is skinny so you can get your hand around like a pistol grip.  It does not interfere with operation of the safety.  The angle aligns your thumb straight behind the barrel.  This helps me point and manage recoil.

Installation is a single Allen key.  There is no linkage like the original stock.  It feels solid.  The SGA put my eye in the right place without a riser.  If you have optics or high sights, you will need one.

There is a spacer system for easy length of pull adjustment. I thought, I would like it to be short, I’ll try it right out of the box with no spacers.  After my hand hit my face in slug recoil several times.  I put two spaces in and found nirvana.  It comes with four spacers and is quick to adjust without removing the stock.

The recoil-reducing butt-pad is thick and cushy.  There are optional cheek risers for use with optics/raised sights and an optional single point sling swivel.

They also make the SGA in Black, Flat Dark Earth, and Orange.

I have fallen in love with an old girl friend all over again.
