The best? The Twist by Multitasker Tools

The Twist by Multitasker Tools of Marietta, Georgia is the coolest and most handy weapons specific multi tools I have had the chance to evaluate. In my years of writing for the firearms industry  I’ve had more than my fair share of tools and gadgets come through my mailbox. A lot of them are wonderful and highly useful, some not so much. Sometimes as a writer it is refreshing to deal with a company you have previous experience with, that was the case with Multitasker Tools.

I had perviously worked with Shane Keng the CEO of Multitasker Tools when I reviewed their Series 3 AR 15 Multi tool, so when I reached out to them and asked to demo their newest tool, the Twist and he agreed to send one I anxiously waited at the mailbox everyday waiting for my package. The need for easy to use and durable weapons maintenance tools can’t be over stated. We tend to forget that weapons are in fact machines, and all machines need tuning and maintaining from time to time.

The Twist is a pen-shaped multi-tool machined out of 6063 T6 Type III Anodized Aluminum. What does that mean in layman’s terms? It means that it is made out of the same Mil-Spec material as the average AR15 receiver. Whether you like the AR15 or not we can all agree that T6063 Aluminum can take a beating and work just fine. That’s important when you need a tool that will perform under almost any condition. Lots of durability in an easy to use and carry size? I was eager to try it out for sure.

Dental Pick, 3/32″ Punch and Carbon Scraper in storage spots

When the twist arrived I tore through the box like a fat kid into twinkies, Once the Multitasker Twist was out of that dreaded USPS box I noticed immediately that the Twist is packaged in a fantastic box with lots of foam to protect it. One of the things I like about Multitasker is that all the items I have ever received from them come in world class packaging. Upon opening the box I surveyed the contents and noticed that things had changed for Multitasker. The 10 bits all come in a flexible rubber holder that is in my opinion an upgrade over the hard plastic case that came with other Multitasker Tools, nice upgrade indeed.

The bits could wait, I was curious to see how the dental pick, 3/32nd punch and carbon scraper would work. The tools are stored in what I would refer to as the bottom of the tool, and I quickly freed them in order to start my testing. I at first thought that the tools would be too small and difficult to use, UNTIL I noticed that they all had threaded ends and screwed onto the bottom cap of the Twist. This was a great piece of planning on the part of Multitasker, I just wish there were instructions or a picture to let users know that this was the case (HONESTY NOTE..After the review was up the CEO got in touch with me and told me to read the box..I missed the instructions..My Fault). No matter I assembled and went to work on picking at pretty much everything on my work bench. I also used it as a default carbon scraper.

Once I had installed, tested and removed all three tips several times I stored them back in the bottom of the twist and turned my attention to the other end. The top of the Twist features a special treat for owners and users of Aimpoint optics, a permanent turret adjustment tool built into the cap. This is another great feature, even if you don’t own or use Aimpoint optics if you are at the range with a friend who does you can help them out if needed. This little feature is ingenious because it utilizes space that would otherwise be useless and lets Multitasker appeal to a larger target audience. That’s what makes for successful companies, attention to detail and it shows.

The Aimpoint turret top cap easily unscrews to reveal the most useful part of the Twist,  the 1/4″ magnetic hex shaft driver. The unit comes with an M16A2 style front sight post adjustment tool. This is a feature that Multitasker has taken from their very successful Series III AR15 Multi Tool, that I have previously reviewed. Many people who use red dot style optics still have foldable hard sights that use this style of turret adjustment. It’s a small detail that is not lost on this writer for sure.

There are ten supplied 1/4″ tips that fit into the magnetic bit holder. Supplied are the following: 3/16 & 3/32″ slotted tips, #1 Phillips bit, T10 7 T15 Torx, and 3/16″, 9/64″, 1/8″, 7/64″ and 3/32″ Hex head bits. As I mentioned before all ten of these are stored neatly in a pliable rubber sleeve that stows easily into any compartment that you are likely to put the Twist.

OVERALL EVALUATIONS

The Multitasker Twist is not a one sized fits all multi tool. It’s never been intended to replace a proper set of AR15 armorers tools. What it’s designed to do is fit in a bag or pocket and give you the ability to adjust optics, grips, and accessories while in the field or at the range. It does this amazingly well, the designers at Multitasker knew exactly what they wanted to deliver to their buying audience and they did it with simplicity and using proven materials and designs.

All that being said the Twist is really fantastic and now resides in my range bag along with the Multitasker Series III tool. This 1-2 punch of weapon tools is more than enough for me to perform repairs or maintenance to practically any weapons that my friends and I own, even including some heavy machine guns. This replaces my need to carry a small gunsmith kit and screwdrivers in my bag, freeing up a few more inches for other items.

The Twist is available from retailers such as  Brownells, Bravo Company USA, and Rainier Arms, expect to pay just north of $50 for this in the standard black coating and $15-20 more for the hydro dipped Multicam. If we find them on sale in the near future we will be sure to let you know.

Do you have a preference in multi tools for your range bag ? SOG, Gerber, Multitasker ? or some other brand? Drop us a line and let us know. Be sure to get out to the range and squeeze off a few more rounds before Fall and Winter are here. Stay safe and have fun

Rick

To Prove in fact the Twist comes with easy to read instructions and a nice pictogram I included it when I edited the story of typos caused my auto correct and I received more specific details on the quality of aluminum used in the Multitasker Twist, Thanks to a gracious CEO.
