Spikes Tactical Thumper: A 37mm Flare Launching Non-Firearm Replica of the M79 Grenade Launcher

The Spikes Tactical Thumper is a 37mm flare launcher, a non-gun. The cool part” It is a 9 and a half pound replica of the Vietnam era M79 grenade launcher. This system is a 37mm flare launcher like no other.

The M79 grenade launcher is a 40mm single-shot, shoulder-fired, break-action grenade launcher that fires a variety of high explosive grenades, flechette, buck shot, smoke and flare wounds. It uses a High-Low Propulsion System to keep recoil forces low.

The first M79 grenade launchers were delivered to the US Army in 1961, just in time for Vietnam. Easy to use, reliable, and powerful, the M-79 blooper was very popular with American soldiers. Recon teams in MACV-SOG cut the barrels and stocks down using them as side arms. It was later replaced with the M-203 which mounted under the barrel of a rifle.

Firearms laws are complicated and vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.  There don’t seem to be any local , state or Federal law restricting the sale or possession of 37mm launchers.   Know local state and federal laws when purchasing and using ammunition for your 37mm launcher!

The BATF has ruled that devices designed for expelling tear gas or pyrotechnic signals are not weapons and are exempt from the destructive device definition. However, the BATF Ruling 95-3 specifically states:

37/38 mm gas/flare guns possessed with cartridges containing wood pellets, rubber pellets or balls, or bean bags are classified as destructive devices for purposes of the Gun Control Act, 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44, and the National Firearms Act, 26 U.S.C. Chapter 53.

There are adaptors which allow the use of different caliber ammunition with 37mm launchers. If you use any “real” ammunition (ie. projectile rounds or shot) you are probably committing a felony.
