Guns Don’t Kill People, Toddlers With Your Guns Kill People

We’ve seen the news, toddler gun accidents are up this year. While we can question the motives of the articles, I think we can all agree that even one accident is too many.

Custom Bed by Borrelli Custom Design

Finding out I was going to be a father rocked my world in so many ways. In addition to needing more living space, I knew I could no longer be lackadaisical in securing my firearms. I found a new home with ample room for our new addition, but it needed some work. I was using Borrelli Custom Design and Cabinetry to remodel three bathrooms, and a home office. They had a stellar reputation around town, and they made the design process very easy.

While going through the design process, I mentioned that I was looking for a location to secure firearms. This being California and working with artists, I noticed some eyebrows raise. But, even the most liberal artisan can support keeping firearms safely locked away. I decided a drawer safe in the bed was a good compromise between security and easy access. It turns out having a custom bed built isn’t as cheap as walking into IKEA, but it fit into my remodel budget and it’s nice that the materials and style match the other upgrades.

Custom Bed with Monster Vault

I ended up getting a Monster Vault Under Bed Safe. I’m happy with my purchase, but the safe isn’t perfect. When the drawer is weighted down, it tends to drag on the carpet. Also, the open/close knob tends to slip into the closed position as you pull the drawer out. When this happens, you have to re-enter the 4 digit pin and open the locking mechanism to get it shut again.

I know that locking your defensive weapon in a safe makes access slower. But, when you have a toddler running around, it is an absolute necessity. Someday he will be old enough to learn how to safely and responsibly own and operate firearms, but until then, my guns will be locked up.
