Last week, we posted an article sharing the Department of Justice’s new “gun safety” research direction, including “gun tracking bracelets,” and other biometric scanning firearms technologies to “make guns safer” at cost of a $382.1 million budget increase. It seems that not all the response to the Attorney General’s announcement has been received with open arms.
According to a recent news report, the Texas state senator, Senator John Cornyn (R), is concerned about the implications of Holder’s “gun safety” interests. The article shares excerpts from a letter, written by Sen. Cornyn to Att. Gen. Holder. In these snippets, Cornyn demands an assurance that no citizen will be mandated to utilize any resulting technology, such as gun tracking bracelets or fingerprint readers, with their firearms.
Some of the reason for concern apparently expressed in Cornyn’s letter was that Holder would be impeding
Americans’ Second Amendment rights as well as overstepping his authority as attorney general if the Department of Justice were to regulate integrating these identifying technologies with citizens’ firearms.
