Surefire MAG5-60 60 Round AR Magazine

September 29, 2012 by Ed Ramsey 18 Comments

Light and reliable, Surefire has done it again with their MAG5-60.  This 60 Round AR magazine weighs 2.02 pounds fully loaded.  It fits in most conventional AR double mag pouches.  The MAG5-60 is only 1.75 inches longer than a 30 rounder and twice as thick.

The MAG5-60 is compatible with all M-16 and AR-15 variants plus any other firearms that will accept standard STANAG 4179 magazines. The body is made of hard-anodized aluminum.

The non-binding coil springs are cadmium coated for low friction and corrosion resistance.  The ingenious nesting followers are constructed of polymer. These mags have very reliable functioning due to mechanical simplicity and high-quality components.  Surefires promises long life and  claims no lubricants are required.  The MAG5-60 magazines can be disassembled without tools for cleaning.

I have been trying to get my hands on one of these since the last SHOT show.  I finally ran into a government agency employed buddy who let me have one.  This magazine does exactly what it is supposed to do.

The construction is very sophisticated, while retaining simple user disassembly.  There are three springs and two followers, but it does not have the complex highly compressed springs of other mags.

Other large capacity magazines have issues with reliability, odd sizes and bulk.  Surefire has done this right.  I haven’t been able to test the 100 round model, but I think the 60 is just right.

You can shoot from the prone, carry them in existing mag pouches and shoot 60 rounds without a jam.  I have almost 1000 rounds through my heavily used model with no problems.
