Quick Look: SOG Vulcan Folding Knife

December 17, 2014 by Scott Witner 1 Comment

Review: SOG Vulcan Folding Knife

With a name that pays homage to the legendary M61 Vulcan rotary cannon found on U.S. military aircraft since the ’50s, the SOG Vulcan folding knife also shares that weapon’s robust construction and impressive potency.

Style of knife: Folding, no assist open.

Blade length: 3.5″. Handle length is 4.87″ and overall length is 8.375″.

Type of edge: Straight clip point, satin finish.

Weight: 5.o ounces

MSRP: $188.50, however you can find it on Amazon for around $97.

Application: Everyday carry, personal defense, emergency survival.

Blade and handle materials: The blade material is VG10 (hardness is RC 59-60). The full-steel liners encased in glass reinforced nylon (GRN) handles give the knife rigidity and durability.

Pros: The construction of the SOG Vulcan is  phenomenal; when you hold it in your hand, you know you’ve got a reliable, strong tool to get you through just about any situation. There is nothing weak about the Vulcan. The patented Arc-Lock can hold over 1000 lbs. of force. The blade is a full .160″ thick with drop-point shape—ideal for survival tasks—and includes a double thumb stud and kick for quick, ambidextrous deployment and use.

Cons: There are not many to speak of. The only one I can think of is the flipper on the blade; there is just too much blade on this model for that to be a practical deployment method. I prefer to use the thumb studs, which still deploy the blade extremely fast.

Bottom line/overall performance: This is a really tough knife that can take a beating. Like I said in the review I did on the SOG Mini Vulcan, it’s a very understated blade and well worth the money. I’ve added an SF skull lanyard to it to signify the origins of the SOG Knife Company. This is one of those knives that you keep pulling out of your pocket, opening and closing the blade just because it’s that cool!

Expect another full field review of this knife in the coming month.
