FNH SPR Bolt Action Rifle …Looks like a competitor, but what do you think?

May 1, 2012 by Destinee 20 Comments

Destinee's SPR Bolt Action Rifle

While I was at the National Rifle Association Annual Meeting and Convention, I had the awesome opportunity to meet Chris Cerino (pro shooter, and History Channel’s Top Shot season one competitor) at FNH’s booth. He introduced me to their beautiful FN SPR A5 M bolt action rifle. It features 10 and 5 round tactical box magazines. Out of the box, it has just about everything you’d need to start precision rifle shooting. The McMillan stock is adjustable, both for cheek weld and length of pull. It has four flush cut mounting points for slings. The action is based off of the Remington 700 action, and it’s smooth as butter. This model is chambered in .308 Winchester/ 7.62x51mm NATO. The cold hammer forged fluted barrel is offered in either 20″ or 24″ models. It’s chrome lined, and guaranteed to fire 1 MOA or less for 30,000 rounds. The MSRP on this gem is $2499, a bit steep, but it is basically competition ready right out of the box. Chris pointed out that one would be hard pressed to build a rifle that would perform as well for the same price. It also comes with a 1913 MIL-STD optical rail that provides an additional 20 MOA. As far as first impressions go, it looks like you get a lot of bang for your buck with this FNH rifle, but it was also great to talk with Chris Cerino. He’s an incredible marksman, and very down to earth. He’s just a cool guy.

I’m considering picking up one of these for my own collection. What do you guys think about a rifle like the SPR for a long range, bolt action option? What would be its effective range?
