New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration will reportedly shell out more than $10 million in an effort to put bullet-resistant window inserts on all NYPD patrol cars.

The NYPD actually started piloting the inserts last year following the killing of officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos in their patrol vehicle in late 2014, as well as the murder of officer Brian Moore in Queens while riding in an unmarked patrol car a few months later.
The inserts are designed to protect the back portion of the driver and passenger-side windows. They also don’t allow the window to be rolled down.
The city is using funds recovered from asset forfeitures to cover the costs of installing the window inserts. Half of the money will be doled out this year, and the rest will be allocated in 2018.
“This is about having the backs of our men and women in blue who, with courage and commitment, don the uniform every day to protect and serve,” City Hall spokesman Austin Finan said. “This investment is our commitment to ensuring the safety of those officers on the beat.”
