In the aftermath of the Orlando nightclub shooting, police in Daytona Beach are hosting an active shooter workshop for citizens.
Police are expecting a large turnout as more and more people worry about their safety in public places. The event will not be the first active shooter training police have held for citizens. More training workshops are being held due to the occurrence of violence in public places, causing people to feel unsafe, officials say.
“Take two minutes, no matter where you go, to have a plan,” said Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood. “Check out where the entrances and the exits are and say to yourself, God forbid, ‘If somebody came in here with a gun, what would I do?'”
Among other techniques, police will use a video made by Homeland Security called ‘Run, Hide, Fight.’ For anyone who is unable to escape an emergency situation, police say to try to find a hiding place that might stop bullets, then advise staying low to the ground and quiet. If you can’t run, you can’t hide, police say, and ultimately you may have to fight to save yourself and others.
