The MCX Rattler’s Airsoft Version: A Look at the Sig Sauer SIG MCX Air Rifle

August 4, 2022 by Allia Luzong Leave a Comment

The MCX Rattler is a popular gun from the SIG MCX firearms, a series of weapons manufactured by Sig Sauer that feature everything from rifles to pistols. The reliability of the SIG MCX series has made them a favorite among gun enthusiasts. Another selling point of the SIG MCX series is the reduced recoil, making it easier to handle.

Arguably the most popular of these SIG MCX guns is the MCX Rattler which later inspired the Sig Sauer SIG MCX Air Rifle. But what exactly is the MCX Rattler and what about its design would make the Sig Sauer SIG MCX Air Rifle any good?

In this article, we’ll be going over the MCX Rattler, the key features, of the Sig Sauer SIG MCX Air Rifle, and whether it’s worth it so you can decide whether you want an MCX Rattler-inspired airsoft gun.

What’s an MCX Rattler?

Sig Sauer MCX Rattler

The Sig Sauer SIG MCX Rattler is a rifle from the Sig Sauer MCX line that features a gas piston operating system and a 5.5-inch barrel. It’s known for its reliability, relatively lightweight design, and compact form factor. While an overall length of 23 inches may not sound particularly short, it’s still a portable gun that can easily be stashed in any backpack.

Its chic design and easy operation make the Sig Sauer SIG MCX Rattler a great source of inspiration for an airsoft rifle which is exactly what Sig Sauer did when they released the Sig Sauer SIG MCX Air Rifle.

A Quick Overview of the Sig Sauer SIG MCX Air Rifle

SIG MCX Rattler airsoft version

The Sig Sauer SIG MCX Air Rifle is a practice gun designed after the SIG MCX Rattler. As you can see, it shares much of the same design elements except for two key factors: the air rifle version has more plastic parts and doesn’t shoot real bullets. Instead, it’s meant to take on plastic pellets.

It swaps the gas piston operating system of the original MCX Rattler for a CO2 air compression system that shoots pellets at lightning speed. This .177 Cal. CO2 air rifle features a tactical grip in front that makes it easy to maneuver through narrow courses in airsoft parks no matter how sweaty your hands get.

The air rifle has a rugged steel housing that keeps it going even through years of wear and tear. The best part? It comes with its own scope, a 1-4×24 scope with a fast-focus ring and mil-dot reticle to help you land shot after shot.

Is the Sig Sauer SIG MCX Air Rifle Any Good?

As impressive as all of that might sound, the Sig Sauer SIG MCX Air Rifle isn’t cheap. Its price easily rivals several cheap guns on the market making it a tough sell for anyone who isn’t already an Airsoft enthusiast.

But what about actual enthusiasts? Is it worth it for them to get the MCX Rattler’s airsoft version?

The short answer is yes but no.

See, the Sig Sauer SIG MCX Air Rifle is designed after popular BB guns operating on CO2-powered systems which means it’s a little low-powered compared to other air rifles in the same price range that use more efficient systems. Still, what makes this air rifle version of the MCX Rattler a favorite of the people who own it is its surprisingly realistic feel.

If you’ve had the MCX Rattler, you’ll find that shooting this air rifle feels a lot like the real thing.
