A late season trip to the Wasatch Mountain range in Utah paid off in spades. Whenever you plan a ski trip this late in the season, you risk deteriorating conditions. Unless it’s March 2019. Utah’s Wasatch mountains have seen over 550″ of snowfall this season and the resorts we decided to ski averaged a base of 160″ or more. That’s over 13 feet of snow under the skis. Arriving at Alta Resort amidst a snowstorm provided great coverage for the next two days. When the dust settled, about 18″ of new snow was there for the taking the following day at Snowbird. As was ample sunshine and warmer temperatures. After day two, the snow started to warm up a bit. So it was back to spring skiing conditions at Brighton and Solitude. Sadly for us, another late-season gift from the Snow God dumped 24″ of blower powder the night before we flew home to Michigan.
Utah was the most convenient place to ski in my 44 years of skiing. Salt Lake City offers direct flights from most major cities and is only 45 minutes from world class skiing. Renting an AirBnB in the Cottonwood Heights area at the base of the Wasatch Range allowed us to be within 30 minutes of four world-class ski resorts. Only a short drive up Big or Little Cottonwood Canyon to Alta, Snowbird, Brighton and Solitude. Additionally, Deer Valley and Park City are only 45 minutes away on the other side of the mountain range. Great snow conditions, dining options, an affluent city and some of the friendliest locals made this trip a clear winner. We’re already planning to return next season equipped to shred some serious powder.
