Hogue Tamer Grips

While a lot of guys and gals have long ago forsaken the revolver for the automatic it still has a special place in my heart. I could wax poetically about why I like revolvers, but you didn’t come here to read that. Today we are going to discuss revolver grips, specifically the Hogue Tamer grips. I own one of the most modern revolvers on the market, the Ruger LCR, a polymer frame revolver with some steel and aluminum components. The Ruger LCR is lightweight, affordable, has one of the best stock DAO triggers I’ve ever used. Mine just happens to be in 9mm, a cheap and plentiful ammunition source. If the LCR has one problem it’s the grips.

Size Matters.

First and foremost they are either too small or I’m too big. I’m willing to accept that my XL hands are not the appropriate size. My second gripe with the grips is finger grooves. Finger groves are my kryptonite. I hate them enough I never moved past Gen 1 with Glocks and I’m super excited for the 17M if they ever get it to work. Maybe this stems from my bigger fingers? I don’t know, but I don’t like finger grooves. I love my LCR and my wife had heard me gripe and moan enough to get a birthday present idea.

Tamed by the Hogue Tamer

When I first got the LCR I really couldn’t find any grips for it, besides some expensive, but still too small wood grips. So I stopped looking. A lot has changed in the last year or so and Hogue Introduced their Tamer grips, with and without finger grooves. I couldn’t be happier.

I usually don’t buy into the ‘accessories make you shoot better’ crowd but these bad boys have truly made this weapon easier to shoot. First off the Hogue Tamer are finger grooveless and secondly, they fill my hand! The rubber material is simple and comfortable and absorbs recoil well. It fills my hand nicely and is soft against the body when carried IWB.

Range Time

The grips really aren’t that much bigger than the stock option. In fact, they are actually thinner, just a little longer. They seemed to be made entirely of rubber and are quite comfortable. Even though this little revolver is only in 9mm it has some oomph, especially with defensive ammo. Tossing a few rounds downrange makes the difference in grip size immediate. I never have to stop and readjust my grip to keep firing accurately. The Hogue Tamer grips give a noticeable reduction in felt recoil and I enjoy shooting this little pocketful of madness a lot more.

Hogue Tamer Install

The Hogue Tamer install is stupid simple. Remove one screw from the bottom of the grip. Remove stock grips. Slide new grips over frame and install with Hogue’s longer screw. If you want your own set of Hogue Tamer grips? Find them here.
