Shooting 6.5 Creedmoor out to 1000 yards!

May 7, 2017 by Nick Irving 6 Comments

The following video is of myself along with good friend and spotter Todd L. shooting out to 1000 yards using the 6.5 Creedmoor!

For those of you who are into long-range precision and competing, you will love this round.

Let me first start off by stating that this cartridge is extremely forgiving.  The 6.5 Creedmoor will “buck” the wind (I like to call them wind cheaters), fly flat, and hit a target with a large amount of kinetic energy despite its size.

For those who understand ballistics and wind, looking at the featured video, you can hear myself along with my spotter calling out MIL come-ups and wind holds.  The wind on that particular day exceeded 12 MPH at times but had a consistent velocity of 10 MPH coming from our 9 and 10 o’clock. The video describes it all, holding less than .5 MILs out to 1,000 yards is insane.  This is due to the projectiles BC, and velocity.  The velocity of this projectile exceeds 2,900 fps at the muzzle (2,950 – 3,000 fps) and has a great ballistic coefficient.  As small as this round is, the kinetic energy it provides is something else to take into consideration.  The 6.5 Creedmoor impacts a target with an energy of ≈1215 ft. lbs at 500 yards.  Comparing that to the M118LR which connects with 1225 ft lbs., I’d have to say that’s not bad at all.  Also note the fact that the ft. lbs of energy at 1000 yards is just shy of 50 ft. lbs when compared to the .308.

Something else you will notice in the video, is the recoil.  The 6.5 Creedmoor has exceptional recoil, almost similar to the .223.

All in all, if you’re wanting less recoil, good kinetic energy, good ballistic coefficient, awesome velocity, all combined in one little round, the 6.5 a way to go.
