The Remington Model 870 is the most popular pump-action shotgun in history. On April 13, 2009, the ten millionth Model 870 was produced. Because it is familiar, we think we know about the 870. Manufactured by Remington Arms Company, LLC. It is widely used for self defense, shooting sports and hunting. Police and military units also find the 870 useful.
John Browning designed the Remington Model 17 (later adapted into the Ithaca 37), which served as the basis for the Remington 31. In a competitive shotgun market, the Model 31 was not highly successful. In 1951, Remington updated the design, introducing the rugged, reliable, and inexpensive shotgun which they called the 870. The recent addition of detachable magazines, Tac 14 shorties and pistol arm braces has given the old girl a whole new look.
