SHOT Show 2018 | Silencerco Chimera 300

Chimera 300

January 26, 2018 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

Last year, Silencerco introduced the Maxim 9. A slick integrally suppressed 9mm handgun. Mid season 2017 saw the Maxim 50 hit the world in the face. A .50 caliber suppressed muzzleloader that doesn’t require a tax stamp. Well, in most states anyways. 2018 Shot Show is here and Silencerco has upped the ante in the suppressor segment with the Chimera 300. This .30 caliber removable suppressor incorporates all the good bits from the Omega series yet improves on versatility and durability.

The Chimera hits the market with no barrel length restrictions. Making it the best choice for a short barreled rifle or AR pistol. Additionally, the Chimera 300 is built for full auto rated firearms such as the M249 SAW. It’s compatibility with calibers from .22 Hornet through the massive .300 Winchester Magnum make the Chimera a great one-size-fits-all option. If you take a look at the dB ratings for different calibers below, you’ll see what I mean.

Chimera 300
Improved ASR mount for easier grip

The Chimera uses the well known and reliable quick attach ASR mount. Fortunately, Silencerco includes with the Chimera, a 5/8×24 threaded muzzle break fitting a wide variety of barrels out there. One aspect that Silencerco improved upon is the ASR mount on the can itself. Incorporating an easier to grip ring improves the ergonomics of the mount. Making attachment and swapping between rifles a simple twist of the wrist. Finally, all of the mounts, muzzle devices and front end caps are exchangeable with the existing Saker ASR series.

Chimera 300

Immediately after SHOT Show 2017, I ordered a Silencerco Omega 300 for use on my Ruger Precision Rifle. It’s compact size and light weight seemed like a good fit on the end of the Proof Research barrel. One year later and the NFA still hasn’t approved my paperwork. This is the frustrating part of suppressor ownership. The $200 tax stamp and government red tape keeping these items from the hands of law abiding citizens is beyond unacceptable. While I’m not holding my breath for the Hearing Protection Act to pass, I appreciate companies like Silencerco that are spearheading the fight to get some sort of legislation passed.

Chimera 300
‘Fight the Noise”

With that said, I’ve decided to add the Chimera to my short list of suppressors in my gun safe. Time will only tell when it ends up in my hands. But I assure you that it will be tested and reviewed here on the Loadout Room. Host rifles will be the Daniel Defense Mk-18 and a 10” barreled .300 Blackout rifle. For now, we sit tight and wait….
