Joining DHS, the US military and a host of other police agencies, the Virginia State Police has officially selected the SIG SAUER P320 Pistol as their official duty sidearm. The Virginia State Police is comprised of three bureaus, with over 2,100 sworn personnel, providing exemplary service to the public, and other law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The SIG P320 is a modular, striker-fired pistol available in full-size, carry, compact, and subcompact options with different grip sizing available in each model. The intuitive 3-point take down requires no trigger pull for disassembly and safety features include a striker safety, disconnect safety, and optional manual safety.
I have fired thousands of rounds through several variants of the SIG P320. I believe that the modular nature of the gun makes it the pattern for all modern handguns. The serialized trigger group makes the P320 adaptable to multiple caliber, size, and grip options. The P320 is available in 9mm, .357SIG, 40S&W, and .45ACP. When they come up with the next great pistol caliber, it will be a simple matter to change your agencies guns over with user level skills.
There has been some very public criticism of the P320. This is common with new guns. Glock and even the 1911 faced similar criticism. Sig has addressed the issues with a free upgrade. As one of the most tested designs ever, the Sig P320 passed military testing for all branches of the US military and the Department of Homeland Security. The Virginia State Police will begin instruction and training on their SIG SAUER P320 pistols and officially place them into service with the Virginia State Troopers as their official duty sidearm in 2019.
