In my continuing quest to stop being a nasty civilian and get back to fighting shape, I’ve been continually finding new ways to work out. Bodyweight workouts are some of my favorite due to the functional use of your own weight. I can also do them basically anywhere, at any time, in a very small space. The problem with bodyweight workouts is eventually some exercises get a little too easy and you plateau. With lifting weights, you add a little at a time and get stronger. You can’t really do that with bodyweight workouts without defeating the entire purpose of working out. That leads us to weight vests, and more specifically the Uncommon Weight Vest.
The Uncommon Weight Vest difference.
Using weight vests typically sucks for anything outside of some very static and non-dynamic movements. A normal weighted vest is fine for push ups, squats, pull-ups, and other basic movements. The problem is they absolutely suck at dynamic movements, with burpees, sprints, box jumps, etc. The uncommon Weight Vest seeks to be a vest perfect for dynamic use.
The first thing I noticed, and you probably did too is the Shape and design. It looks like a plate carrier, and the weights inside look like plates. The design is really genius. Plate carriers fit the body way better than weight vests. The Uncommon Weight vest looks and functions like a plate carrier, and makes traditional weights vests more like old school flak jackets.
The vest is adjustable and can fit a multitude of body types. It can be tightened at will and is quite comfortable. The use of hook and loop is nice and convenient to adjust. The shoulder pads keep the straps from digging in painfully to the shoulders. The vest doesn’t shift, jump, or move when doing more dynamic exercises as long as it’s properly adjusted.
The vest can hold up to 4 plates. Each plate weighs 10 pounds. These are not ballistic plates, and I wouldn’t want ten-pound plates in any tactical gear anyway. The inside of the vest is mesh covered and pretty soft and easy on the body.
Review Criteria
I’ve done two workouts with this vest so far, and it absolutely destroys me. The Uncommon Weight vest has added some serious difficulty to what was a basic calisthenics workout. I want to get some more workouts under my belt before I dive headfirst into a review, but the Uncommon Weight vest seems promising. Now if you guys will excuse me, I’m about to go punish my body with this vest. Check out Uncommon Breed here and remember hard times make hard people.
