Why the Sig 320 is Going to Rule the World: Open Design Architecture and Modularity

My friends are tired of hearing me say this: The Sig 320 is not just another handgun. It is changing gun world in ways we are just beginning to understand and will fundamentally change the way we buy and modify guns forever.

The Army bought the Sig P320 as the Modular Handgun System. What provides the “Modular” feature of the the P320 is the Fire Control Group (FCG). According to ATF, which is the only opinion that matters, the serial numbered FCG is the gun. All the other pieces are just parts, transferable without regulation.

The open design architecture along with increasingly available home manufacturing capability will let hobbyists take control of their guns in ways not possible before. Not only changing size and caliber on a whim, but making functional and truly custom guns tailored to the individual shooter.

Sig sells caliber X-change kits with all the parts you see above in various calibers and frame sizes for about $400 mailed directly to your house, no FFL needed. I counted 11 models on the web site, there will be more. I expect X model performance up grades packages with red dot optics and competition trigger parts coming directly from Sig soon.

The grip module is cleverly designed to be easily and cheaply replaced. The Fire Control Group is modular so trigger parts will be easily changed for advanced performance. Barrels and slides will be made by s3f and other companies making Glock compatible products now. P320 magazines to will be common place and standardized.

What has started my latest rant is a Facebook post from Strike Industries with the photo above attached.

First prototype in the works. Started the design process for Strike Industries lower frame’s’ for P320. (More than 5 models with tons of unique functions!)

A lot more P320 accessories coming soon…

The guys at Strike are going to make affordable grip modules with all the design tricks that made them famous. With more than 5 models coming, you can bet they will be accommodating different size guns and hands. In the not too distant future, you will send a scan of your hands to Strike and they will sell you a custom download to print a grip module on your own 3D printer. Don’t have a 3D printer? You can go to future Kinko’s and use their 3D printer for a nominal fee. There will be custom adjustments you can chose to tune the grip.

In a related story,  GhostGuns.com has announced they are  developing an 80% Fire Control Group insert which will allow Americans to build P320 compatible clones by drilling/milling pin holes and trigger sections. No need for a machine shop, this garage work.

The Sig 320 is a good gun. As it evolves, it will become a customized perfect gun for each shooter. I cant wait. You can bet as I hear more about 320 parts, I will pass it on.
