SIG’s modular wonder: The Sriker Fired Pistol P320

Sig P320 - thearmsguide.com

The hammerless SIG P320 is the first striker fire pistol for gun giant Sig-Sauer.  I have always appreciated SIG for their various models of hammer fire handguns, especially the P226, which features a double action/single action.  This new gun builds on the reputation of its older cousins, but aims at a whole new market.

Here are its main features:

Features

Sig P320 - thearmsguide.com
Notice that there is no hammer in the rear of the P320. This new SIG is their first striker-fired gun.
  • Striker fire.
  • Polymer frame.
  • Will be available in 9mm, .40 S&W and .357 SIG.
  • Main intended market is law enforcement and the military.
  • Modular design allows caliber changes without buying a new gun.
  • Safe disassembly requires magazine removal and slide lock back without requiring a trigger pull.

SIG’s representative informed us that the development of a striker-fired SIG was driven by the demand from law enforcement and military customers. SIG explained their focus while meeting that demand with, “we wanted to make sure we got it right” and “wanted to make sure it was truly a SIG pistol.”

According to SIG’s press, the P320 is also available with these optional features:

  • Tabbed safety trigger.
  • Frame-mounted ambidextrous manual safety.
  • Loaded chamber indicator.
  • Magazine disconnect safety.

Final Thoughts

I feel that even though SIG related that their main focus with the P320 was to meet the demand from law enforcement and military personel, I could foresee this pistol being popular with the civilian market as well—especially for concealed carry. I also find appeal in this new SIG’s modularity. As an AR-15 guy, I appreciate the ability to customize and switch out calibers merely by changing some of the parts. To quote Sig on this feature, their website states:

Here is another close up shot of the new SIG P320

“The unique modular design of the P320 offers the user the ultimate in flexibility to change calibers, sizes, and fit. Small, medium, and large complete polymer grip modules ensure comfortable and optimal fit for the widest range of hand sizes.”

Personally, I think the modular design is a desirable feature and leaves a lot of options open, allowing  the firearm to fill multiple roles. The hammerless design also decreases the risk of snagging on clothing while drawing from concealed carry.

Regarding the pistols availability, a firm release date not yet been announced. But, SIG has revealed that the MSRP will be $713.00. When this pistol hits the market, would you pay over $700 for a striker fire pistol that isn’t a Glock?
