Secret Service Lost Guns Again

In recent years the U.S. Secret Service has been viewed several times in a less than ideal light. Agents of the U.S. Secret Service undoubtably have an on the job stress level that many of us could never comprehend. They are tasked with protecting key members of the White House and Congress as well as their families. Its a find line to walk indeed, but recently a article by Kathryn Watson has suggested that Secret Service Agents have lost some of their duty weapons on a semi regular basis.

Now stop and let that sink in for a moment, what should be the best trained and dedicated members of the entire United States Federal Law Enforcement system who would give up their own lives to stop a bullet for the people they protect have a history of LOSING, everything from vehicles, badges and credentials to select fire automatic weapons, and its a minor footnote on the news. Now if this report was coming from one unnamed semi anonymous source then I would laugh it off as some fringe loon who has it out for law enforcement, but that isn’t the case here. The numbers are really staggering.

Through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the watch group www.judicialwatch.com found that in 2004 alone the U.S. Secret Service lost a staggering 1362 items in their possession. Most commonly lost items were as follows: Radio Equipment 191 reports, computers 106 total splint evenly with 53 being laptops and 53 being desktop units. In 2002 the reports are far worse with 69 weapons being reported stolen and 40 sets of official credentials. The reported information also goes into details of how Secret Service Agents were deployed under “Operation Moonlight” and “Operation Moonshine” to protect the friend of the Agency’s director who was having repeated disputes with THEIR NEIGHBOR. Now I’ve had bad neighbors but none I ever needed the U.S. Secret Service to talk to.

Rick Dembroski I spent 10 of the best years of my life as a USAF Civil Engineer, traveling the globe, drinking beer, and causing chaos. My superiors dubbed me "King of Useless Knowledge" a title that I still love to this day. I separated in 2002 as a SSgt (E5- in the USAF), and chose to stay in the frozen north of Alaska, currently I work as an Emergency Management Specialist where I combine my love of chaos and preparedness to ensure people know how to survive disasters.
