SB Tactical Mini: The Lightest Stabilizing Brace for Minimalist Builds

The SB-MINI is the lightest, minimalist interpretation of the Pistol Stabilizing Brace. The SB Tactical Mini  is an updated version of their original SB15 that challenged the ATFE and started the AR pistol revolution. If weight and footprint are a consideration, the SB-MINI is the solution.

If you are on this site, you must know we love AR pistols. Of all the AR pistols, the 9mm versions are the the most fun. The short barrel and the absent gas system make the 9mm ideal for short light builds and the Mini is the perfect brace for these small guns.

While you can use any 1.1 to 1.25 inch pistol buffer tube, with the SB STDT AR Pistol Receiver Extension the length comes out just right for me to get good eye relief. I have long forearms.

The Mini is a great brace and provides the stability to use the accuracy inherent in the AR pistol. Wither you shot .223 or a pistol caliber carbine, the SB Mini is the perfect acessory. After a couple of hundred rounds of practical work, I would not hesitate to recommend the Mini for competition or serious home based social work.

There has been some confusion as to the legality of the arm brace if shouldered.  SB Tactical fought for clarification of some silly and self contradicting rulings. Here is the latest, if you install an arm brace per the instructions, with the intention of shooting the pistol one handed and you don’t modify it from the ATF approved configuration with an arm strap, it is not an issue if at some point later it touches your shoulder while shooting.

In March 2017, the ATF issued a private letter to SB Tactical clarifying that the mere act of firing an unmodified, SB Tactical™ Pistol Stabilizing Brace® from the shoulder does not constitute a “redesign” of the host firearm into an NFA short barrel rifle. When fired from the shoulder, a Pistol Stabilizing Brace must be in its original, approved condition and may not be physically altered for use as a shoulder stock.

Confused yet? Let SB Tactical explain:

The Pistol Stabilizing Arm Brace was inspired  in 2012 when inventor Alex Bosco at the range with a disabled friend who was asked to stop shooting his AR-15 pistol because of his poor control of the firearm. In 2013, Alex  started SB-Tactical and came up with the SB-15 to help disabled shooters operate an AR-style pistol one-handed. The idea is simple, a flexible plastic cuff wraps around a shooter’s wrist or forearm and an integrated Velcro strap secures the brace in place.

Bosco sent a sample to Tech branch and ATFE issued a ruling that the accessory was legal for pistols. The SB-15 brace debuted at the 2013 National Rifle Association show. It is unusual for a major company to take on the ATF. The gun community owes a debt to SB Tactical for pushing to expand freedom in many areas where regulators were heavy handed and narrow minded.

AR-style pistols had been around for years but were not particularly useful because they were difficult to shoot. The arm brace changed all that. There was some conflicting guidance from ATF, but SB Tactical challenged ATF’s tortured logic and the brace is in clear legal territory. Because SB successfully brought the arm brace to market challenging the ATF, there is a wave of re-imagined pistols and shotguns. Suppressors may be removed from the NFA.

Under the current policy. ATF has stated clearly that you may build, buy, or sell an arm brace equipped pistol and shoot it one-handed, from the hip or from the shoulder.

This veteran-designed and U.S.-manufactured accessory enhances accuracy and reduces felt recoil when using an AR-style pistol. Made from high-quality, elasto-polymer, the Mini is manufactured to close tolerances and fits all pistols equipped with an AR-style buffer tube 1.2” – 1.25” in diameter. The Pistol Stabilizing Brace uses the operator’s forearm to provide stable support, thereby minimizing accuracy-robbing spin and shift. A flexible cuff with an adjustable nylon strap allows the Mini to be custom fit to any user.
