A Magfed Mossberg? – The Mossberg 590M

Mossberg 590M

Remington and Mossberg seem to be trading blows left and right when it comes to their classic shotgun platforms. Last year it was the Shockwave versus the Rem Tac 14. This year it seems to be a battle of the mag fed pump action shotguns. Remington came out first with their 870DM, and Mossberg followed up with the Mossberg 590M. I got a little hands on time with the 590M with at Shot Show’s industry range day. I walked away smiling.

A Bias Selection

Personally I’m a bigger fan of the Mossberg 590M platform. I prefer the safety, I prefer the dual action bars, and the fact the Mossberg 500 is an easier gun to work on. With that said if my gun store had gotten a Remington 870DM in the gun shop I’d have already grabbed one. Now, I’m waiting for the Mossberg 590M. The 590M and is a standard pump action shotguns that simply takes a magazine. The big advantage to the Mossberg platform is the magazine capacity.

Mossberg 590M

The Mossberg 590M uses a double stack magazine, which offers substantially more capacity than the Remington 870DM. The Mossberg 590M offers shooters a 5, 10, 15 and even a 20 round magazine. The gun will come with a ten round magazine and magazines will be available at launch. The 590M will come in two configurations one is a standard 500 and another is a tactical 590 with a set of ghost sights, a heat shield, and a tri-rail fore end.

Handling the Mossberg 590M

It handles like a Mossberg 590 with a magazine, and that’s it. There is a magazine release built in front of the trigger guard that’s easy to access. It’s odd inserting the magazine into a Mossberg 590, but ultimately its not hard. Could you do it in a tactical situation? That remains to be seen. The Mossberg reps told me the gun will be out first quarter 2018. Watch this space for more.
