Honest Everyday Carry: Dick Henry’s EDC

The Arms Guide Writers were talking, and were wondering if we should cover our own Everyday Carry (EDC) items. I know it’s been done on other blogs, but I think our eclectic group of firearms experts may bring something new to the table.

We decided that our EDC articles would have to be honest. Too many times it looks like people are dumping their battle belts on the table and saying it’s their EDC. Carrying a SBR, a full sized 1911, hatchet, chainsaw, and a maglight may work for my fellow writers in Alaska, but it won’t fly for me in Southern California.

I’m currently traveling for work, so I couldn’t exaggerate my EDC even if I wanted too.

My HONEST EDC:

Firearm: Glock 26

I generally carry outside the waistband at about the 3:30 position. I know all the cool kids are rocking the appendix carry inside the waistband. I do have a good holster to carry inside the waistband, I just don’t find it as comfortable. When I’m traveling by plane, train, or automobile I usually switch to an ankle rig. Again, I know ankle rigs have fallen out of favor, but to me it makes a lot of sense if you are sitting for a long time. Drawing and shooting for an ankle rig is something you definitely need to practice should you choose to carry that way.

Keychain:

My keys and other tools rest on a CRKT Li’l Guppie. It has a knife, Phillips and flat screwdriver, bottle opener, and adjustable wrench. I used to carry a separate knife, but this does 99% of the jobs as a bigger knife and adds a lot of other functions.

Everyone should have a good pen. I am never without one, because I carry an Inka Pen on my keychain. You can use it as a mini pen if you just need to make a quick note, or assemble the parts into a full size pen for more serious writing.

For a light, I carry a Maratac AAA mini-flashlight. It fits on my keychain, and puts out more light than a cellphone flashlight.

Watch: Maratac Original Pilot

I can’t say enough good things about the Maratac watches. In fact, I own 3 of them. They are bulletproof, automatic, reasonably priced watches. I’ve taken them diving with no issues – they advertise water resistant to 10Atm. They look great, and don’t have any branding on them.

Ring: Cerakote Wedding Ring

I did a full write up on how to keep your wife happy and spend money on your guns.

Restraints: Soft Restraints

So you carry a gun? What are you going to do if you pull your weapon on someone who is doing something that justifies using deadly force, but that behavior stops before you shoot them? Now you have a person who needs to go to jail, but doesn’t need to die. How are you going to detain them until the police come? It’s something every CCW holder should think about. For me the soft flexible restraints fit nicely in the little coin pocket in my jeans, and they are part of my EDC.

Not shown: I’m currently traveling and in my backpack I have a small first aid kit, better flashlight, and one extra magazine.
