The Arms Guide Handgun of the Year for 2017: The Sig 320 X-Five

Of all the impressive Handguns that we have seen this year, we have selected the Sig 320 X-Five as The Arms Guide Handgun of the Year for 2017. The Arms Guide writers at looked at three broad areas in selecting the gun of the year: Innovation, Value and Function. The Sig 320 X-Five‘s modular design, excellent trigger and well thought out features put it over the top.

Innovation:

The Sig 320 X-Five has, at its heart, the ground breaking design which won the Army’s Modular Handgun  competition and the Homeland Security contract. The trigger module can be plugged into any other grip module to create a virtually new gun with the same serial number. In the coming months, there will be unprecedented development of new designs by amateurs and professionals alike will allow aftermarket and 3-D printed parts to change this gun in ways we cannot predict.

The X-Five pistol is optics-ready right out of the box. The rear sight plate can be removed as a unit and replaced with a ROMEO1 red dot optic. This is the first time you have been able buy a handgun and the optic from the same company.

Sig also makes a trainer the same size and weight as the 320, the SIG SAUER P320 Advanced Sport Pistol another integration first for SIG, this trainer fits in 320 holsters and fires .177 pellets.

Value:

The Sig 320 X-Five is the flagship of the 320 X-Series. Sig calls it the “pinnacle for competition.” It is chambered in 9mm or .40 S&W and ready for a match right out of the box. The X-5 has been upgraded with every feature a boy could want: a five-inch match barrel, flat trigger, fully adjustable sights, detachable flared magazine well, integrated grip weight,  extended beaver-tail, undercut trigger guard, extended slide catch lever, optic ready and four 21 round (9mm) steel magazines. If you do the math, you get much more than your money’s worth in desirable options thoughtfully matched to the gun. The X-Five is ready on arrival.

Function:

The gun looks great, the slide has three lightning cuts on top and grasping grooves in the slide that are straight and aligned with the grip angle.

Dawson Precision® Fiber Optic sights are my favorite. The colored post draws the eye and the wide rear notch lines up fast and provides a very precise picture. The rear sights are fully-adjustable.

The P320 X-Five  grip module has a deep trigger guard undercut, a high back strap and an extended beavertail which combined with the flared mag well exactly form to my hand. This provides a high grip for great recoil management. The removable grip weight lets you tweak the balance to exactly where I want it.

The X-Five has a straight trigger that helps the shooter get a consistent set and press. It breaks at 90 degrees for an even better feeling pull.  As if that wasn’t good enough, there is more.
