I’ve had many watches in my life, my first was a simple wind-up Timex that still works, telling time and day. Most days I don’t wear a watch, not because I don’t have one but because I can’t program/reprogram the one I have. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great watch but it has more functions than I know about and I’ve long forgotten the way to program the time so it’s correct only 6 months of the year. Then there’s a beep that makes people think I have my phone inside rooms at work where I shouldn’t have a phone, not a good look.
Enter the MTM Hypertec Chrono 2A, all the functions I need, the ruggedness I require, bold style, and nothing more.
Do I need Atmospheric pressure, do I need an altitude measurement, do I need to answer my phone, or check my calendar, all via my wrist? No, but I DO need to know the time, and the date, and on occasion, I need a stopwatch. I would also prefer it to be accurate, very durable, and with a bit of style as well. For some time now I thought I was out of luck until I ran across MTM watches.
After looking at their website and speaking with Tyler I soon had a Hypertec Chrono 2A headed my way.
I was a bit surprised when a good-sized box arrived but when I opened it I remembered all MTM watches come packed inside a watertight Barracuda box. Unpacking the box gives you the watch, operating instructions, warranty / serial number recording card, and 2 Allen wrenches in case you wish to change the strap.
The instructions and controls are straightforward and I had the time and date set and watch on my wrist within 15 minutes after opening the box, seriously I was in chill mode early!
The case size is 44mm wide and 15mm thick weighing 4.8oz so it’s a bit of heft on your wrist at first but easy to get used to. The action is Quartz – Miyota OS11 and so far hasn’t deviated a second since being set 3 weeks ago and is water resistant to 600ft / 200 meters and has luminous hands and index.
There are two sub-dials, one for measuring seconds, (the bottom one) and the upper measures minutes for the Chronograph. Chronograph seconds are measured by the large second hand currently pointing up at 12 in the above picture. Starting, stopping and resetting the Chronograph is done easily with the two smaller buttons and that’s ALL they do, work the Chronograph. Time and date are easily adjusted with the larger center button which proved very simple to understand and simpler to use.
The watch is highly customizable via MTM’s website where you can choose different bezels, straps, dials and more.
What it does well is tell time, which is exactly what I needed it to and I’ve already used the Chronograph. It has a bold distinctive style that people take notice of and have remarked positively on. I can see it in the dark so I don’t have to pull my phone out to tell the time during the day or at night either. My initial impressions have been proven true and I’m still excited to see how the watch “keeps on ticking”!
There are some cons, I’m still getting used to the weight of the watch and I’m not used to wearing a watch yet either. It’s been 2 (?) years since I’ve worn a watch full time and now that I found what I’ve been looking for, I’m having trouble using it!
Both of those minor issue can be overcome with a bit of time….
