Super Human?

September 2, 2013 by Eric Davis 13 Comments

In one way or the other we all either want, or think we need, super strength –  hearing, vision and intelligence. For the most part we’ve all conceded that any significant human enhancement is only accomplished in the movies. But, for the select few who understand how to master and leverage technology, human enhancement isn’t a science fiction topic – it’s simply an “App”.

The commercial world is finally beginning to catch up with the military, where super powers are not optional, when it comes to human performance. So far I’ve yet to see either side produce intuitive or meaningful performance accelerating technology so as of now it’s been reserved for the highly trained or ambitious; but “Times they are a changin”.

Chances are that you’re now thinking about specially engineered foods, performance enhancing drugs, or exoskeletons. That’s just where our collective common sense goes; but I’ll invite you to look at this topic from a much more simplistic and accessible perspective. Super human power is all around you. The problem is that you just need four eyes to see it.

The Parashoot2.0 isn’t a device we’ve had the opportunity to use, as it’s still in production. We’ve decided to showcase it here because it’s the paradigm shift we thought important to the Loadout Room readers. The commercial shift towards the meaningful application of the technology they are producing is what we’re really reviewing here. Historically technology companies have mass produced fun and entertaining options for those with excess cash; but in this day and age technology, all aspects of it, must be understood and exploited.

Parashot surveillance camera

Clearly the huge gap between the Engineers and Marketing teams leaves us all wondering what the hell they made this for still exists; but It’s really not their fault. They’re just following the current produced by the early adopters and innovators that exploit the blood sweat and tears of the knowledge laborers, to dominate this knowledge based, technology driver,  marketplace.

Take a look at the ParaShoot 2.0 from a new and more powerful perspective. Consider all of the ways you could deploy such technology to enhance your life or increase your capacity. Don’t just accept the obvious. Stretch and consider the possibilities. In business I have a saying. “It doesn’t’ matter where the capacity comes from. Save 10 minutes a week from making coffee and you have 10 more minutes to make money / workout / etc”.

Take a quick look and tell me what shows up for you. My wife, after she told me to stop worrying about how technology like this would save our lives, told me that she loved the idea because pulling out her iPhone to video our kids bike riding wasn’t working; but she didn’t want to drop 4-Hundy, and base jump off of Everest to buy a Gopro camera either. She liked the possibility of an in between and inexpensive option to capture a ride down the local beach trail.

So here are “four eyes” – hit me in the comment section and tell me what you could / would do with technology like this. Lets not rely on “Marketing Majors” here.

The ParaShoot camera appeared on kickstarter.com for a second time this past August.  Here’s why we’re excited about it’s December release and the revamp, the 2.0 version.  As an added feature, the ParaShoot 2.0 altered it’s mounting capability so it’s not required to be worn as a necklace / lanyard.  This takes it from the realm of ‘just another small camera” and into the world of surveillance and easily accessible visual capturing of everyday circumstances.

Features Include:

  • magnetic and has multiple mounting capabilities

  • customizable skins make it discreet

  • lightweight (under 2 ounces)

  • 16 gb of memory

  • wireless capability

Our favorite part – there’s an app.  An app that allows you to see what you are recording right at that moment.  An app that enables you to take a snapshot in the middle of recording.  An app that can sync the video to a computer wirelessly.  Used in tandem with it’s discreet profile and ability to adhere to multiple devices and areas – while we don’t see it as a fashion piece, we think it’s a good option to add to a repertoire of both preventative and proactive surveillance gear.
