Spyderco Knives P’kal and Training Blade

September 6, 2017 by Scott Witner Leave a Comment

Spyderco Knives P’kal and Training Blade

Spyderco produces an array of knives for just about every occasion. There is your smaller EDC folding knife that is pretty common among first responders and Military, to even your larger fixed blades that Spyderco enthusiasts love to carry. Personally, I think Spyderco has found their niche with the smaller EDC folding knives. One knife to especially keep an eye out for is the Spyderco P’Kal. This blade is a little different from your usual folder. It offers a reversed style blade that comes in handy for many uses.

The Spyderco P’Kal’s plain edge blade is a full-flat ground blade that is crafted from CPM S30V stainless steel, and features a slightly curved edge for enhanced cutting power. This allows the user to really put a lot of force into cutting or slicing through something. The P’Kal has a removable post-style opening feature that provides amazingly fast one-handed blade opening by hooking on the pocket during the draw. The knife can be concealed in the front pants pocket of your jeans or cargo pants and automatically opened as you draw the knife out of the pocket. The P’Kal can also be opened manually with the Spyderco trademark round hole, that has always made Spyderco famous.

As a “reverse-edge” tool, the P’Kal’s handle is ergonomically designed to be held with the sharpened edge facing inward toward the user to facilitate powerful pulling cuts. The handle’s full stainless steel liners are capped by textured black G-10 laminate scales that house Spyderco’s patented ball bearing Lock. This is an extremely strong lock mechanism that is also completely ambidextrous. To support all appropriate carry and deployment methods, the P’Kal also features a reversible steel wire clip that provides tip-up, edge-forward and edge-back carry on both the left and right sides. The clip can easily be changed over to either side by unscrewing the small torx head screw.

Also available from Spyderco is the red training blade that can be purchased separately. Having a separate training blade with a “non-live edge” lets you experience the exact feel and weight of the live blade.

The Spyderco P’kal is a unique folding blade that is great for EDC carry or much more. I will definitely use this on the job site, or keep it as a backup tool in my vehicle or go bag.
