SIG’s P320-M17: The Modular Handgun System for the Rest of Us

July 19, 2018 by Mark Miller Leave a Comment

SIG SAUER has been teasing a civilian version of the U.S. Army’s M17 official service pistol for awhile now. The Army’s M-17 is a P320-based platform, selected for its uniquely innovative modularity, uncompromising performance and unmatched capability. Understandably, while the losers of the Modular Handgun System (MHS) competition have been selling the flat dark earth pistols they submitted to the competition, SIG has been pretty busy shipping their winning design guns to the Army and all the other branches of the military fulfilling their contracts.

The good news today is that SIG has sent the military enough guns that they can make a few for the rest of us. The civilian version is called the P320-M17 and it is on its way to an FFL near you. The P320-M17 closely follows the specifications of the U.S. Army’s M-17. There are many internet experts who have never seen an M-17, yet they believe that the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Air Force and the Coast Guard have gone through millions of rounds of extensive testing and picked the wrong gun. Who are you going to believe? Now you can see for yourself.

I have fired the M-17 and the M-18. I am going to buy a P320-M17. After one of the most rigorous and highly competitive review processes in the history of military firearms the SIG SAUER XM-17 was awarded the Modular Handgun System (MHS) contract for the U.S. Army. I have a lot of friends who are waiting for these to hit the stores.

Whenever the the U.S. Army chooses a new gun, there are a lot of old soldiers who buy one because of sentimental value. I didn’t have a great relationship with the M-9, but I bought a Beretta. With the M-17, I am shopping with enthusiasm not seen since I got my Remington M-1911. I am still looking for a Colt M1917 New Service revolver. SIG is going to sell as many P320-M17’s as they decide to make. When the P320-M18 comes out, those will fly off the shelf too.

Safariland? I am looking at you. I am going to need a holster for my P320-M17. My buddies want to buy them too. The same model the GI’s have would be perfect.

M-17 and holster as issued by the US Army

The P320-M17 is a 9mm, striker-fired pistol and comes with two 17-round magazines. The pistol features a coyote-tan PVD coated stainless steel slide with the same optic cut as specified by the MHS contract, and black controls just like the pistols currently being shipped to the U.S. Army. It comes equipped with a SIGLITE front night sight and removable Night Sight rear plate. The P320-M17 features a coyote-tan carry-length grip module, available in three sizes, and comes standard with a manual safety. Non-manual safety P320-M17 pistols will be shipped at a later date.

The P320-M17 Specs:

  • Total length: 8”
  • Barrel length: 4.7”
  • Weight (incl. magazine): 29.6 oz.
  • Height: 5.5”
  • Width: 1.3”
  • Sight radius: 6.6”

MSRP: $768.00

The P320-M17 is shipping to stores in August 2018. The countdown has begun.

M17 Collectors Case MSRP: $199.99 (sold separately at sigsauer.com/store)
