A lesser known tool for maintaining your knives and hatchets is the Sanding Sponge. I’ve seen less than a handful of ‘survival experts’ use these as part of their maintenance routines. It may not be for everyone, but it’s just another option you can have in your maintenance kit. I picked up mine at the local Dollar Store for a buck! You can’t go wrong with that even if you don’t use it.
The sanding sponge I picked up at the Dollar Store is a medium/fine grit. This is great for removing any burr’s after the sharpening/honing process. This is also a great option for removing any dirt or debris from the edge of the blade while in the field. Combine this with a small sharpening stone and you have yourself a killer little field maintenance kit for your knife.
