CMMG MK47 Mutant | A 7.62×39 AR-15 done right

November 1, 2017 by Jens "Rex Nanorum" Hammer Leave a Comment

CMMG Mutant

We’ve all been listening to the AR-15 vs AK-47 debate for years.  Rather than being content with producing quality AR’s, CMMG has thrown their hat into the hybrid ring and has produced the MK47 Mutant: a heavily modified rifle based on the AR-15, chambered in 7.62×39 and adapted to use AK-47 mags.

Based on CMMG’s mid-sized MK3 platform, the Mutant utilizes a heavy .308 based bolt and bolt carrier.  The barrel is 4140 chrome-moly steel and comes in at 13″, with a krink style muzzle device pinned and welded on to bring the total length to just above 16″.  The barrel is tucked under CCMG’s 15″ handguard, (keymod style) with the muzzle device just sticking out past the handguard.  The whole package weighs is at 7.4 lbs.

As you’ll see in the picture below, the lower receiver is the most obviously modified part.  The magazine well is cut off, and the mag release is a lever that will feel instantly familiar to anyone who’s put in time on an AK.  Otherwise, expect AR ergonomics from the charging handle, fire controls and the Magpul CTR stock.

You might expect that a rifle that borrows so heavily from two different platforms to be a challenge for your muscle memory to adapt to.  I’ve found it to be the best of both worlds.  The AR’s safety location, trigger options, buttstock options, bolt release and charging handle are superior to the AK’s in my opinion.  The AK’s “rocker style” mag changes are intuitive and easy to keep consistent even under gross motor function.  While much of the cheap surplus ammo in 7.62×39 has dried up, there’s still deals to be found that keep this round cheaper than .223/5.56 in many places.

Practicing weapons manipulation drills and mag changes under dry-fire conditions have given me very positive initial impressions of the CMMG Mutant.  The Mutant is the perfect name for this rifle as it borrows the best from both worlds.  I’m gathering up enough ammo to make testing this rifle a memorable event.  In the meantime, head over to CMMG’s website and check it out!
