Cold Weather Shooting Gear: Seirus Xtreme Gloves

Cold Weather Shooting Gear: Seirus Xtreme Gloves - TheArmsGuide.com

As the third snowfall this month started drifting to the cold Wisconsin ground, I had to admit to myself that my least favorite season has arrived. I’m no polar bear, so as soon as the ambient temp hits 32°F, the gloves come out. But, I also concealed carry in winter. That puts specific demands on my gloves ensure that my choice to protect my hands from winter’s chill doesn’t prohibit me from effectively drawing, and shooting, were the need to arise. My solution? Seirus Xtreme All Weather Gloves.

Weather Protection

My only reason to wear gloves during the long Wisconsin winter is to keep my hands warm and dry, especially when it snows. The Seirus Xtreme gloves I wear are both waterproof and warm. They have two layers – a fleece lining, and a flexible outer shell with a rubberized palm.

Fit

Just because I hate the cold doesn’t mean I’m not going to continue visiting the range. That means I need slim gloves that won’t impede my ability to pull the trigger. It also means that I need gloves with a “grippy” surface, so that I can safely manipulate firearms without risk of them slipping around while I’m trying to shoot. The low profile of the Seirus Xtreme gloves was a major factor in why I purchased them. The rubberized material sewn onto the palm, thumb, and index finger of the glove allow me to achieve a non-slip grip from draw to trigger pull. They’re sold in mens’ and womens’ sizes−a womens’ medium fits me perfectly.

Additional Features

The Seirus Xtreme gloves also come with a Soundtouch option. That is, for a few extra bucks, you can purchase these gloves with Seirus’s Soundtouch technology that will allow you to operate your smart phone (or other touch screen devices) while keeping your fingers toasty inside your glove.

Performance

After a couple of hours at the range this weekend in <30° weather (with a windchill of ~4ºF), my fingers felt numb and I had to take a minute to warm them up again. With the Seirus Xtreme gloves, I am well prepared for my next backyard snowball fight; they are surprisingly waterproof (an ideal feature for snowball manufacture). Between the SoftGrip palm and the slender profile, they work well for the range. I’ve yet to have an issue fitting my gloved fingers into the trigger guard of any of my firearms. My dad ended up getting his own pair after seeing how my Seirus Xtreme gloves work for me.

Because I don’t want to worry about yanking off a glove before drawing, were I to find myself in a self defense situation, I end up having to compromise between extra warm, and effective grip. So far, the Seirus Xtreme gloves are the best option I’ve found.

Great review. I also choose firearms that I can fire with gloves on in the winter, and that has aggressive stippling. That is why I carry a Gen 4 over  a Gen 3 Glock. I can comfortably operate the trigger with gloves on too. I also choose a +p heavy carry load during the Winter. Hornady 135gr+p 9mm is my winter carry ammo.
