Quick Look: SOG Bowie 2.0

December 11, 2014 by Scott Witner 7 Comments

SOG Specialty Knives

From the manufacturer:

The original SOG Bowie that founded our company was based on a knife used by the Studies and Observation Group of the U.S. Special Forces and other elite soldiers in the Vietnam War. The SOG Bowie 2.0 has combined the traditional SOG Bowie with modern technology and materials, and has become a classic that is unparalleled in quality.

In 1986, the original SOG knife inspired a young designer named Spencer Frazer to found SOG Specialty Knives. His mission: to reproduce the original SOG Bowie knife and pay tribute to an organization so badass, it spawned the Special Forces, Navy SEALS, and Marine Force Recon!

The new SOG Bowie modeled after the Bowie used by the MACV-SOG units.
My personal SOG Bowie modeled after the Bowie used by the MACV-SOG units.

Style of knife: Bowie

Blade length: 6.4″

Type of edge: Straight clip point

Blade and handle materials: The blade is AUS-8 steel with a hard-cased black TiNi coating. Epoxied stacked-leather handle.

Weight: 11.2 ounces

MSRP: $248.50, although I have seen them sell as low as $165 on Amazon.

Unique features: The sculpted crossguard, deep hollow grinds, precision detailing, and faceted tip are unmistakable signatures.

Application: Fighting, field tasks, hunting, bushcraft, survival.

Pros: Includes leather sheath with lanyard and sharpening stone.

Cons: The handle, though it fits the hand well, is smooth and can become difficult to grip in wet conditions. The included sheath only allows you to carry the knife using the belt-loop option, which may cause the knife to move around and not stay tight to your body when moving through brush or tight spaces.

Bottom line/overall performance:

In a forthcoming full review, you will see this knife in its intended role as a survival knife and see what it’s capable of.

Available for purchase from Amazon.com.
