Colorado experienced another school shooting recently in the town of Centennial. Reportedly, eighteen-year-old Karl Halverson Pierson was “set off” by a teacher kicking him off of his school’s—Arapahoe High School (only eight miles away from Columbine—speech and debate team. Pierson allegedly targeted the teacher who had pulled him from the team. Reports place Pierson at the school, threatening the teacher with a shotgun. Pierson had also brought two Molotov cocktails, one of which he lit within the school (the other was recovered and deactivated after the event). The teacher convinced Pierson to move the confrontation outside, away from the students within the school building.
Some students report hearing as many as six gunshots. Pierson critically wounded a fifteen-year-old student (at the time of this post, the victim is still living) before turning the gun on himself, taking his own life. No one else was injured in the encounter, including the teacher who Pierson addressed at the beginning of the conflict.
This brings to my mind the question of teachers and concealed carry. There are some who feel allowing conceal carry licensed educators to have firearms on school grounds would be an effective measure to help prevent attacks such as these. What do you think?
